Our worship of God an

d lives of prayer are grounded in the liturgical and spiritual traditions known to the saints of the British Isles and Western Europe in the 1st millennium, sensitively incorporating certain customs drawn from the wider Orthodox Church. We are blessed to be the direct spiritual descendants of those luminaries of the 20th century - St Irenaeus of Paris (Irénée Winnaert), St John of Saint-Denis (Eugraphe Kovalevsky), St John of Shanghai & San Francisco, and Maxime Kovalevsky, among others - who worked tirelessly to restore and establish an expression of the holy Orthodox Faith that celebrates the rich traditions of the Orthodox West alongside those of the universal Orthodox Church. This, along with the Divine Office and sacramental rites that accompany it, forms the bedrock of our worshipping life. We started as a small mission in a private home towards the end of 2018. Due to COVID-19, we had to cease public worship in 2020 for over a year, and travel restrictions meant that it wasn't until 2022 that we were blessed with the services of a priest. By the mercy of God we have survived a number of challenges, and our focus now is on bringing to the people of the communities we serve the rich apostolic Tradition which we have been blessed to inherit, providing them with a home in which they can enter into the life and love of the Saviour Jesus Christ. Our numbers, though growing, might still be small but our hearts are big and our faith is sincere. We invite you to explore this Orthodox life with us and to claim it as your own.

We offer a reminder that our parish has produced a prayer book for domestic use, containing offices for morning and evening prayer, table blessings, preparation for confession and Holy Communion, and much else, reflecting the Western Rite use of the Orthodox Church.

The Saint Melangell Prayer Book is a Christian devotional prayer book, filled with spiritual and musical treasures from the ancient Orthodox West. Many with an interest in the Orthodox Western Rite will know of the work done by St John Maximovitch in supporting the Western Orthodox communities in Fr...

The Divine Liturgy for the Solemnity of Pentecost.

In our Western Orthodox tradition, the liturgical colour for this feast is red, symbolic of the tongues of fire that rested on the heads of the disciples gathered in Jerusalem in the Acts of the Holy Apostles, chapter 2.

Father Cyprian's chasuble bore images of the Holy Apostles, who were inspired and empowered by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Good News of salvation to the four corners of the earth.

This same Holy Spirit sustains the daily, sacramental life of the Church and indeed of all creation, and takes up his dwelling in each of us personally at our Chrismation.

May the Holy Spirit fill the hearts of his faithful and kindle in us the fire of his love.

"O men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into the sky?
Alleluia!
As you saw Him ascend into heaven, so He will come again.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!"

With these words, from time immemorial, Christians have celebrated the feast of the Ascension of the Lord.

Departing from his disciples, the Saviour imparts his blessing, and promises them the gift of the Holy Spirit Who is to come.

We celebrate this by ceremonially extinguishing the Paschal candle, which is the symbol of the risen Christ physically present among us, for now He walks no longer with us on earth but is enthroned in heaven, at the right hand of the Father.

In human flesh, taken from the most holy Mother of God in his Incarnation, He returns to the Father, elevating human nature and uniting it forever to the life of God, and leaving us the promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Of your charity, pray for the repose of the soul of Audrey, who fell asleep on the 2nd of May after a long illness. Her funeral took place today at Oldham Parish Church.

Audrey and her daughter Susan, along with Mohibur, were pivotal to the founding of our parish community, and a great support to then Subdeacon Cyprian. It's impossible to imagine how a regular pattern of worship could have developed without them in those early years, and we owe them an immense debt of gratitude.

After a busy Sunday the previous week with the baptism of two members of our parish family, we had a quieter 5th Sunday after Pascha. Still, we made Lucas (St Luke of Simferopol) a catechumen and offered the festive, paschal form of the Divine Liturgy for the final time this year.

On the 4th Sunday after Pascha, we welcomed Daniel (the Holy Prophet Daniel) and Alexander (St Alexander Hotovitsky) into the family of God through the Holy Mysteries of Baptism and Chrismation, and partook with them in the Body and Blood of the Lord for the first time. In the fight against satan, the flesh and the world, Christ conquers and has claimed two more trophies to his glory and for their salvation.

May God grant them both many years!
