Wealth and Prosperity - is it the gospel? What does the Bible teach about material prosperity?

The Christian's true riches come from the Holy Spirit. There's righteousness, peace and joy. Those things aren't found in the pursuit of money.

"Better the little that the righteous have, than the wealth of many wicked". Psalm 37:16.
Teachers of the Prosperity Gospel state that all Christians should be wealthy. However, from the verse above we learn two things. First, that righteous people may have little material wealth and second, that many wicked people may have a lot. The bible makes clear that material wealth is uncertain but true wealth is to be content with what you have.

Many prosperity teachers have accumulated vast sums of wealth. They are living and preaching a lie because money is not true riches.
"Let others boast of heaps of gold,
Christ for me, Christ for me;
His riches never can be told,
Christ for me, Christ for me.
Your gold will waste and wear away,
Your honors perish in a day;
My portion never can decay,
Christ for me, Christ for me."

'My heart is fixed eternal God' hymn by Richard Jukes (1804-67).

I often feel that one of the reasons why many embrace the false prosperity gospel is that there is so little teaching on the wonderful inheritance that is stored up in heaven for us (1 Peter 1:4). I am therefore pleased to announce the publication of my e-book available from Kindle:

Some prosperity teachers point to the patriarchs such as Abraham and Job, who were very wealthy, as the way God wants to 'bless us financially'. However, in Hebrews 11 the writer commends the faith of many believers who "...went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated". Furthermore, they are given this accolade: "The world was not worthy of them" (v37-38).

What are you seeking?
"Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs". 1 Tim. 6:10. The dangers of money are spelled out clearly in Scripture. So "if your wealth increases, don’t make it the center of your life." Ps. 62:10.

So, what is wrong with the prosperity gospel? The answer is in the name. It's a me-centred gospel, focusing on my material wealth. Jesus didn't leave behind material wealth when he came from heaven to die on the cross. No, he left behind his spiritual treasures so that they could now be transferred to us (Eph1:3). The true gospel is all about Him, all for His glory.

A thought-provoking post by Heidi Baker from Mozambique:
One time a preacher visited our tribe. He was not from Africa and did not know what to expect. He had prepared to preach on the story of the lost coin in Luke 15:8–10. As part of his talk, he asked if anyone had a coin he could use as a visual aid. Not one hand went up. He turned around and asked the
senior pastors on our team for a coin, but not one of them had a coin. I watched his face as it suddenly dawned on him. The poverty in that place overwhelmed him. His eyes filled with tears and he wept, right there and then, for the lack he saw in front of him—a lack he had never experienced before, a lack he had never personally been challenged by.
Certainly our tribe is financially poor. No one has anything of monetary value. But that does not stop us from being rich in other ways or making our offerings to God. Our people might not have cash to put in a bucket, but they worship Him in dance...they have no shame in dancing as an offering of praise.They will walk for three days to go to a meeting and dance for God. They will travel through hot and dusty villages, without food or water, to give the only thing they can offer—themselves. My people are some of the richest on earth. They are some of the most joyful. They do not consider themselves poor. They rejoice that they have been found. They see themselves as blessed and rich and whole.

The gospel free of charge.
What then is my pay? It is the opportunity to preach the Good News without charging anyone. That’s why I never demand my rights when I preach the Good News." (1 Cor 9:18). Paul had the right to make a living from preaching the gospel but was determined never to burden anyone. How different are those who preach the prosperity message and live lavish lifestyles by exploiting others.

The carol 'Once in Royal David's City' reminds us that:
"With the poor and mean and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour, holy". He could have come to the wealthy but he was born into an impoverished family, in the humblest of circumstances. Behold our King!

Seek His face
In the Bible we read "Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always." (Psalm 105:4). Seeking God's face means pursuing a personal encounter with Him. Nothing else must distract us from being in His presence. The riches of this world end up being a trap and snare. What is your heart seeking after today?
"My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, LORD, I will seek." (Psalm 27:8).
