We often associate ‘freedom’ with release from imprisonment, from oppression, or from an abusive situation but while, hopefully, few of us have suffered in this way, we all need release from an inner imprisonment, and that is release from the bo***ge of sin and self. And the good news is that this is precisely what Jesus offers us through His death on the Cross – an end to the hold that sin has over us, an end to the guilty conscience that comes back to haunt us, and the freedom of new life, life of a new quality and dimension. But lest we take this lightly or for granted, we need to admit that we have done nothing to deserve this, for the sacrifice you made, Lord Jesus, was purely out of love, the love of God made perfect in a human being. Teach us to love like this, Lord, with a love that forgives and allows others to find freedom and new life in you.

Amen

This is a message of "Thursday Thanks"
Some of you may know from the Prison Prayer Letter that our 3 years of grant funding with the National Lottery ended in December 2025 and our Chair Gavin recently wrote in the prayer letter about our struggles financially.
The struggle is far from over and we continue to pray and make funding applications, but as a result of Gavin's article we did receive a number of very generous donations towards our work and we thank God and all the people who donated.
If anybody wishes to make a one off or regular donation please contact [email protected] or find our bank account details below:

Lord Jesus, your final command to your disciples was to go into all the world and take the Gospel to all nations, and, fired up with the Pentecostal power and assurance of the Holy Spirit, they began the work you had commissioned them to do. Their world was smaller than ours, Lord, and their means of communication far more limited, but those who followed on after them took tremendous risks to carry on that work. And now it is up to us, Lord, we who are entrusted with telling others of the new life and hope to be found only in you. Lord, give us courage so that we may not fail to follow the example of those who have gone before us, and spread the Word to our generation.

Amen

Today we offer a huge thank you to Heather Steward for her wonderful work at Withington Methodist Church. Due to staff illness at Withington many of the administrative duties have been taken over by Heather on a voluntary basis. This has meant that she has managed bookings and lettings for our rooms for hire and this has led to an increase in one-off bookings and also much longer term ones to such organisations as L'Arche, the BBC and the Manchester Indian Association. She has covered many of these bookings herself, meaning that she is on the premises most days, sometimes from 9am to 9pm! She's also Church Steward, Safeguarding Officer amongst many other voluntary posts! It's little exaggeration to say that Withington Methodist Church would not have been able to continue all the important community services that it provides without Heather's work! At the same time as this, she's become a proud grandmother to two grandsons and one granddaughter - all born within weeks of each other, to complement the two elder grandchildren.

We want to live in ways that bring glory to you, Lord God. We want other people to learn of your love through the way we live and speak and act. We want other people to discover the new life and hope we have through Jesus Christ, and to know the peace that comes from putting our trust in you for now and for the future. But often, Lord, we try to do all of this in our own way and in our own strength, and because of this we let ourselves, and more importantly, we know we let you down! For only through the power of your Holy Spirit at work in us can we overcome the faults and reactions that can spoil our witness for you. So, Lord, today help us to go forward in your strength, that we may more nearly follow the example of Jesus in our living and our loving.

Amen

Thank you to Liz Stuart for our prayer for June:

Awesome God, God of all abundance, as we approach mid-summer we revel in the exuberance of nature and in the promise of fruitfulness to come; we are full of wonder as through Jesus we learn of your love, and find that love ‘poured into our hearts’ through your Holy Spirit, your grace-gift to us; and we are amazed as through your power working in us, we discover we are able to do ‘immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine’. All this for us, Lord! And so we ask that you open our eyes to recognise those glimpses of your beauty in the world around us, our minds to savour all you would teach us, and that our hearts may be so open to receive your love that it may overflow into the lives of those around us. And, through this, bear the fruit of those who have been abundantly blessed – and all of it to your praise and glory.
Amen
