The attack by Russian forces on Kyiv’s historic Dormition Cathedral is despicable. We pray for an end to the killings and the destruction. Thinking of the Ukrainian community in the West Highlands at this time. 🇺🇦

Rt Rev Gordon Kennedy, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, has shared a message of solidarity with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine after Kyiv's Dormition Cathedral was damaged in a Russian attack.

The early medieval cathedral suffered what has been described as significant damage during a wave of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital which resulted in 11 deaths.

Mr Kennedy said:
On behalf of the Church of Scotland, may I express our solidarity with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and condemn the wholly unjustified attack on the Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, which has damaged a sacred sanctuary and a place that lies at the heart of the spiritual identity of the people of Ukraine.

The Dormition Cathedral has been a place of worship since the 11th Century and is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site for its universal spiritual significance.

To deliberately attack such a place is to violate the sacred bond between the Maker of heaven and earth and those who bear the image of God; a bond that lies at the heart of what it is to be part of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

We pray:
Almighty and Eternal God.

Grant peace in our time, and an end to war,
in Ukraine, and in all the places of our world ravaged by conflict.

Grant protection to places of sanctuary and worship,
that bonds may be forged and reconciliation flourish,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The Reverend Donald Kerr Prentice BSc BD (1954-2026)

I am sorry to share with you the sad news that Donald died yesterday. He was 72 years of age. Donald served as locum minister at North West Lochaber after the retirement of the Rev Stewart Goudie and prior to my appointment. After working as a civil servant and a teacher, Donald was ordained in 1989. His first charge was Iona and Ross of Mull linked with Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon (on the Isles of Iona and Mull). In 1992 he became an Army Chaplain. In 2010 he was appointed to the charge of Dallas linked with Forres: St Leonard's linked with Rafford. Please remember his wife Alison and their family in prayer. "The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." (Deuteronomy 33:27)

Other news

The Thursday afternoon "drop in" at Mallaig Church Hall will NOT take place on 18th and 25th June.

We hope to set up a Gaelic conversation group. No times have been decided just yet.

Further announcements will be made in due course about both the future of the "drop in" and the proposed Gaelic conversation group.

I will be on holiday next week. The service at 11.00 AM on Sunday 21st June will be in St Columba's Church, Mallaig and will be led by Anthony Titley. The next scheduled email update from me will be on Saturday 27th June.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Blessings and greetings to you. I'm writing this whilst on a train returning from visiting my parents on their 60th wedding anniversary. They are now both in their late 80s and becoming increasing frail, but I am fortunate to still have them. Thank you for your prayers and for the good wishes that I have passed on to them.

On Sunday 14th June the service will be at the Land, Sea & Islands Centre in Arisaig, starting at 11.00 AM. (We'll be back in the Astley Hall on 28th June). The Bible readings at the service on 14th June will be Genesis 18:1-15 (the three visitors to Abraham) and Matthew 9:35 - 10:8 (the workers are few; Jesus sends out the twelve).

On Sunday 21st June the service will be in St Columba's Church, Mallaig, at 11.00 AM. The service will be led by Anthony Titley, with the opening prayer led by John Henderson.

Last Tuesday, I did the second (advanced) part of the Church's safeguarding course. Reiterating what I wrote week, if you have any concerns over a safeguarding issue (for under 18s or a vulnerable adult) please contact Pamela, our Safeguarding Co-ordinator.

There will be no email from me next week.

Bible text - Psalm 46:

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’ 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Every blessing,

Matthew

Happy St Columba’s Day!

Happy St Columba’s Day!

Today is the feast of St Columba, the 6th century Irish missionary who founded Iona Abbey and was responsible for bringing Christianity to much of western Scotland.

One of the best known depictions of the saint is this beautiful little stained glass window by Douglas Strachan in St Margaret's Chapel in Edinburgh Castle.

It depicts St Columba at the prow of a boat, clasping a bible under his vibrant purple and blue cloak and a shepherd's crook in his left hand. Behind him a partially obscured boatman appears to be rowing the ship to port.

At the bottom is a shield-shaped vision of St Columba as an old man, reading at a desk with an open door beside him, showing a building, perhaps Iona Abbey, under sunset sky...

All welcome at the Church Service at 11 AM on Sunday 14th June at the Land, Sea & Islands Centre in Arisaig.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Warm greetings to you. "The Jacobite" steam train service has (at last) started again - I hope that this will come as a relief to our local businesses who have lost trade due to the steam train's cancellation during April and May, as well as the issues affecting the ferry services. I hope and pray for stability, reliability and safety with our transport services over the coming months.

On Sunday 7th June there will be a Communion service at St Columba's Church in Mallaig, starting at 11.00 AM. The Bible readings will both be from Matthew's Gospel: [1] Matthew 9:9-13 – The call of Matthew and [2] Matthew 9:18-26 – The healing power of Jesus. All are welcome - irrespective of whether or not you wish to receive Communion.

On Sunday 14th June the service will be held at the Land, Sea & islands Centre in Arisaig, starting at 11.00 AM.

Last Saturday I gave a few words of greeting at the Mass in the Roman Catholic Church in Morar. I am very grateful for the warmth of the welcome. It is essential that we work together through cordial ecumenical relations in advancing the message of the love of God revealed in Christ.

Last Tuesday I did a safeguarding course in Glasgow (which is compulsory for Church of Scotland ministers). I found this very helpful and worthwhile. It is essential that the Church strives to ensure that all are safe from ANY type of abuse - with particular emphasis on safeguarding vulnerable people. Our Safeguarding Coordinator Pamela is the principal point of contact if you have concerns over a safeguarding issue. I will be taking the second part of this course on Tuesday 9th June.

The date of the next Kirk Session meeting has had to be changed to Wednesday 24th June at 7 pm, at Mallaig Church Hall. The agenda will be finalised in due course (which will then be circulated to elders and will also be available on request from Mr John Arnold, Session Clerk). The previous proposed date was 17th June, but this has not proved feasible.

I'm happy to do home or hospital visits. Please do let me know if you - or someone you know - would like a visit. Please send me an email. If possible, I try to do visits to the Belford Hospital in Fort William on a Wednesday (although I will not be able to do so this week).

If you have any information for inclusion in this weekly email, please let me know no later than 7 pm on Fridays.

Bible text - 1 Thessalonians 5:4-11
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Every blessing,
Matthew
