Luke 12: 49-53
Jesus said to his disciples:
“I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

As we reflect on these words, “Set the earth on fire” can, at first, sound like arson. And isn’t it curious that Jesus proclaims division? That he appears to renounce peace?

Contemporary Jesuits have revived an expression attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola: ite, inflammate omnia—“go, set the world on fire.” Like Jesus, St. Ignatius is obviously not proposing arson, but ardour: ardour to bring the light of faith and the warmth of love to every corner of the earth, to every human person. No doubt that the fire of the Holy Spirit is destructive: it destroys the sin and evil within us. It purifies our hearts to see God as he is, and to see all people as they truly are - children of God.
