You may have noticed that the clock bells have stopped ringing. Unfortunately, the motor that operates the bell-ringing mechanism has died!

We are looking into getting it repaired, but unfortunately this is not a straightforward job and is likely to be costly. We will keep you updated as we find out more.

Thank you for your patience.

Did you know we have a prayer tree at the back of church?

It’s a place where you can leave a prayer - for yourself, for someone else, or for something happening in the world.

God hears every prayer, whether it is spoken aloud, whispered in your heart or written down. We also make sure that the prayers left on our prayer tree are included in our prayers, either by our prayer group or during our Thursday service.

So if there is something you would like us to pray for, you are very welcome to leave it on the tree.

Our latest 500 Club draw has taken place, and congratulations go to our two lucky winners:

🏆 Gwen Newman

🎉 Sam Rosenberg

Not quite enough for a yacht in the Caribbean, perhaps… but it’s certainly better than finding 30p down the back of the sofa! 😄

And now there’s even less excuse not to join, because our brand-new, rather splendid website makes signing up to the 500 Club easier than ever.

You can now join online and pay by card in just a few clicks. It’s a great way to support the life and work of St James while having a bit of fun and the chance to win a prize each month.

Can you help us put names to some familiar faces?

We’ve been looking through some wonderful sketches by the artist Charles F. Tunnicliffe, believed to have been drawn at a fete here in Sutton in 1928 - possibly in the Vicarage garden or on the Glebe field.

We’ve attached the sketches, and now we’re hoping that someone might recognise a face!

Do you know who any of these people are?
Perhaps they’re a relative, a grandparent, great-grandparent - or simply a familiar face from Sutton’s past.

The Charles Tunnicliffe Society is very interested in finding out more about these sketches, so any names, family stories or information you can provide would be hugely valuable.

Have a good look through the pictures and let us know in the comments if you recognise anyone. Even a “that looks very much like my great-grandad…” could be the clue we need!

Please share this post too - you never know who might recognise a face from 1928! 🕵️‍♀️

Do you need a quiet place to sit and reflect on your relationship with God? The church is open from 10am to 4pm and you are always welcome to come in and sit with God for a while. We have some prayer stations around the church to help if needed.

Did you know our church was originally a chapel? It was built as a part of the former St George's in 1840 and in 1860 it became its own church. At nearly 200 years old we certainly have plenty of history in the building! What memories do you have here?

A different kind of worship

Not every Sunday evening needs to be busy, lively or full of words.

Our Contemplative Worship is a chance to slow down, be still and make some space to listen.

Through a short Bible reading, silence, reflection and prayer, we take time to notice what is happening within us and to listen for what God might be saying.

You don't need to know the Bible. You don't need to know how to pray. And you don't have to say or do anything you're not comfortable with.

Perhaps you've been coming to church for years and are looking for something a little different. Perhaps you're curious about faith but aren't sure where you fit. Or perhaps life has simply been a bit noisy lately and you could do with some time to stop and breathe.

Come as you are.

Quiet. Reflective. Unhurried.

Everyone is welcome.
