Consecrated in 1864, the church was gifted to the village by Admiral Frederick Moore Boultbee and serves as the parish church for Bank, Emery Down and Gritnam. With seating for about 120 the church is an ideal settin

g for weddings and marriage blessings. The church's lychgate is the war memorial for Emery Down and commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars.

Discovering Taizé this Sunday 6th September at 6pm: ‘A Festival of Creation in Christ – the Earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it’.

The reflections in this Sunday’s prayer will be ‘The Earth is the Lord’s’, taken from ‘The Cry of the Deer’, Meditations on the Hymn of St Patrick by David Adam.

The reading will be from Ecclesiasticus or the Book of Jesus, Son of Sirach.

Taizé is a contemporary form of prayer with songs, readings, reflections and silence in candlelit surroundings making it an evening to remember. Taizé chants are easy to learn because they repeat the same few words over and over again. Just relax, listen, and reflect.

KIA 18 August 1916. Commemorated on the Lychgate to Emery Down Church
Fred was born in Emery Down on 14 December 1895 the son of Mary Annie Blake. Mary Annie married Samuel Godwin in Emery Down on 22 August 1896 and Fred’s surname became Godwin.
By 1911 Fred was a stable boy living with his family in Silver Street, Emery Down.
Fred emigrated to Canada and by 1914 was in the local militia (36th Peel Regiment, Ontario); that year he sailed from Halifax to Bermuda to enlist in the army for basic training (477349 Private, ‘C’ Company, The Royal Canadian Regiment [RCR]). The Regiment sailed for England as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in August 1915 and embarked for France on 1 November 1915. By December the RCR was in trenches on the Ypres Salient where on the 19th the Germans used phosgene gas for the first time. Fred’s family was in his thoughts as he sent a handkerchief to his young sister Violet in England on 5th February 1916 from a Field Post Office. In defence of Hill 62, the Regiment fought in the early days of the Battle of Sorrel which began on 2 June 1916; although relieved after a few days the Regiment was back on the Salient by August.
Fred took part in a trench raiding party ordered to destroy an enemy bombing post on 18 August. The war diaries state that the enemy forward loop trench was strongly held and that the Germans were waiting for the attack – when the men got through the wire, enemy machine gun fire, shells and grenades caught them. The diary says of the 16 Other Ranks: “one dead and 15 wounded, 2 of which will probably die”. Fred was one of those who died from his wounds and although picked up from the battlefield none of the central clearing stations record his name. Fred’s headstone gives his date of death as 19 August 1916 but the grave registration form states 18 August. Fred was aged 20. After the raid the Commanding Officer issued a commendation to the Regiment for splendid gallantry.
Fred is buried at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium where his headstone is inscribed: “A Bitter Grief A Shock Severe May He Rest In Peace”.
