Dominican Sisters of St Joseph

Dominican Sisters of St Joseph The Dominican Sisters of St Joseph - called to praise, bless, and preach for the glory of God!

We serve the Church through a unique balance of contemplative prayer, monastic observances (enclosure, habit, silence...), sung liturgy, and study together with an active work of proclamation and teaching of the Catholic Faith in the light of the New Evangelisation. It is from our strong fraternal life of contemplation and observances that we are enabled to carry out our apostolate as a community.

Please note that on Saturday of this week (20th June), there will be no public prayers in our Chapel.

FOLLOWING THE KINDLY LIGHT: our retreat day for first-year students of the Light of Truth Certificate in Catechesis took place yesterday! It was so good to be together. The day included reflection and discussions on our mission as catechists, inspired by St John Henry Newman's poem 'Lead Kindly Light', as well as plenty of opportunity for fellowship and prayer. Thank you all so much to those who came, both in-person and via zoom - and a big thank you too to our Dominican brothers for hosting us at Blackfriars, Oxford!
Spaces to begin our Certificate in Catechesis in September 2026 are nearly fully booked! If you would like to study with us this year, head to the Light of Truth website now to secure your place now: https://www.lightoftruth.uk/certificate

Happy solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus!

'Entering into the heart of Christ, we feel loved by a human heart filled with affections and emotions like our own. Jesus’ human will freely chooses to love us, and that spiritual love is flooded with grace and charity. When we plunge into the depths of his heart, we find ourselves overwhelmed by the immense glory of his infinite love as the eternal Son, which we can no longer separate from his human love. It is precisely in his human love, and not apart from it, that we encounter his divine love: we discover “the infinite in the finite”.' - Pope Francis, Dilexit Nos 67

Happy memoria of Saint Barnabas!

Lord God,
you filled Saint Barnabas with faith and the Holy Spirit
and set him apart for the conversion of the nations.
Grant that the gospel of Christ,
which he preached so strenuously,
may, in our day, be faithfully proclaimed
by word and deed.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Portaferry friends reunite! At the weekend we were blessed to have Fr Benedict Manning visiting our community. Fr Benedict and Sr Cooey were neighbours growing up in Ireland and so were especially pleased to have the chance to catch up!

FREEDOM OF THE HEART: On 30th May Sr Carino and Sr Lucy were honoured to take part in the Summit at St Patrick's, Soho, which focused on monastic wisdom for everyday life. They joined hundreds of lay faithful to listen to Bishop Erik Varden and Fr Jacques Philippe's keynote talks in the morning, and in the afternoon provided two shorter talks before joining Bishop Erik and Fr Jacques for a final Q&A panel. It was a beautiful day in which the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable! We are so grateful to have been involved and are keeping all the organisers and attendees in our prayers.

On Saturday 6th June, the Lymington Lay Dominicans met at the Priory for their monthly meeting and formation from the sisters. This month Sr Catherine led a session on apologetics, which combined principles with practice of how we can approach conversations on potentially controversial topics of faith in everyday situations. It is important that we are prepared to speak the truth in love, and always to pray for those with whom we have these conversations.

Wishing everyone a blessed memoria of Blesseds Diana, Cecilia and Amata, the first Dominican nuns!
Bl Amata was technically removed from the Dominican Ordo a number of years ago as there is less historical information on record about her. However, tradition links her closely with Bls Diana and Cecilia, and we as a community still privately remember her today and ask for her intercession for our community, and especially for our Sr Amata who is named after her.

CORPUS CHRISTI SEQUENCE: LAUDA SION

Behold the bread of angels, sent
For pilgrims in their banishment,
The bread for God’s true children meant,
That may not unto dogs be given:
Oft in the olden types foreshowed;
In Isaac on the altar bowed,
And in the ancient paschal food,
And in the manna sent from heaven.

Come then, good shepherd, bread divine,
Still show to us thy mercy sign;
Oh, feed us still, still keep us thine;
So may we see thy glories shine
In fields of immortality;

O thou, the wisest, mightiest, best,
Our present food, our future rest,
Come, make us each thy chosen guest,
Co-heirs of thine, and comrades blest
With saints whose dwelling is with thee.
