Luton Quaker Meeting

Luton Quaker Meeting Luton Quakers meet for worship each Sunday morning at 10.30 am
https://lutonquakers.org.uk/ Quakers strongly believe in the equality of all.

Quakers are a religious organisation dating from the seventeenth century. Its roots are in Christianity but today Quakers are a broad-based group of those who believe that there is something of God (or the divine) in everyone. We welcome people regardless of gender, colour, nationality, disability or sexuality. We make no distinction spiritually or organisationally between men and women.

To mark Conscientious Objectors' Day, we are sharing a new blog post by The Peace Museum volunteer, Dianne Goacher, about her mother's experience as a Conscientious Objector (CO).

Mary was conscripted to be a nurse at just 19 years old. Influenced by her Quaker beliefs, she was an ‘absolutist’ who refused to participate in any form of war work. However, due to her age and type of enlisted work, Mary was not allowed to register officially as a CO. Instead, she was fined twice and eventually imprisoned in Strangeways in Manchester for her beliefs.

Head to our website to read more about Mary’s experience through the words of her daughter, pieced together from her 1942 pocket diary, documents, letters and memories of her time in prison.

We also have documents relating to Mary Cockroft on display in our museum, generously loaned to us by Dianne.

Today is International Museum Day, and this year's theme - Museums Uniting a Divided World - couldn't feel more relevant to what we do.

As the UK's only peace museum, building peaceful and inclusive societies isn't just something we support in principle - it's the reason we exist. Every story we collect, every exhibition we share, and every person we engage with is part of our mission to inspire people toward a more peaceful world. We do that by amplifying the voices of those who have advocated for peace and nonviolent alternatives to conflict across history.
