Parish Church of St Laurence, Ludlow

Parish Church of St Laurence, Ludlow The ashes of the poet A. E. Housman (1859-1936), the author of 'A Shropshire Lad', were scattered in the churchyard.

'The Cathedral of the Marches'

'Very fayre and large and richly adorned and taken for the fairest in all these quarters.' John Leyland

One of only 18 churches given a FIVE STAR rating by Simon Jenkins in England's Thousand Best Churches. Dominating the town centre is the exceptionally fine 15th-century parish church of St Laurence, with its 41m / 135ft elegant tower, wonderfully carved misericor

ds and stained glass windows, reflecting the town's prosperity as a centre of the wool trade in the Middle Ages.

The Hereford Gospels for Today project will be on display in St Laurence's from 10-23 September 2026.

The book itself was handmade by Arthur Green of Green's Books in Ledbury, then the congregation of Hereford Cathedral filled it with creative responses to the Bible's Gospel stories, or to the Anglo-Saxon Hereford Gospels book itself.

We look forward to hosting this amazing project at St Laurence's!

This week, from 6-13 September, St Laurence's is part of the Global Week of 24/7 Prayer. This doesn't mean you have to pray 24/7, but because of the global participation, people around the world are focusing on prayer for the entire week!

We have stations set up around our St John's Chapel with resources for ways of looking at prayer and encouragement for those new to praying, experienced with prayer, and anyone in between! (We're open 10am-5pm daily, and so are the prayer stations.)
