Proverbs 21:17-21.

The written Word is a wise Word - "The words of the wise." (V.17).

The written Word is to be applied - "Bow down thine ear, and hear...and apply thine heart unto my knowledge. For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee;l." (V.17, 18).

The written Word is a trustworthy Word - "That thy trust may be in the Lord." (V.19).

The written Word is an excellent Word - "Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge." (V.20).

The written Word is a sure Word - "That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth." (V.21).

The written Word is in irrefutable Word - "That thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee." (V.21).

Last night at our prayer meeting we considered our Lord's words in Matthew 11:12:"The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force."

Our focus was upon the holy violence of prayer, not a violence directed toward men, but a determined laying hold upon God. The Christian life is not passive.

The flesh continually opposes the Spirit, and every believer knows something of the struggle involved in drawing near to God. Yet Scripture calls us to stir ourselves up to take hold of Him (Isaiah 64:7), pressing through unbelief, distractions, and spiritual sluggishness.

We connected this with Psalm 37:4: "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

As we delight ourselves in the Lord, He not only answers prayer but shapes our desires. He plants within our hearts longings that are pleasing to Him, desires for holiness, communion with Christ, the salvation of souls, the advance of His kingdom, and the glory of His name.

True prayer is the soul laying hold of God's promises and pleading them back to Him. It is coming to the throne of grace with holy expectancy, believing that God delights to answer those desires He Himself has placed within the hearts of His people.
"Lord, do as Thou hast said." (2 Samuel 7:25)

Although the Bible says, "Life and death are in the power of the tongue," this should not be taken to mean that simply by speaking a thing it will happen.

For example, that by repeating something negative that you can produce what you say, that you can bring yourself or someone else into adversity or illness.

Fallen man is not that mighty!

However, we read of our sovereign God - "He spake, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood fast." One word from Him, and there is life. Or one word from Him, and there is death. His word is almighty, and nothing can overturn it.

Also, man's tongue is not that mighty that by always speaking positively he can produce positive things in his own life, or in someone else's life.

Some so-called positive speaking is really an ignoring of reality. For example, someone who is sick cannot "speak wellness" over himself. He has no reason to expect that the critical illness he has will go away just by that.

It is in the power of Jesus Christ alone to speak wellness over people - "Speak only the word, and my servant shall be healed." Ignorance assumes that it can do what He did. Ignorance has no idea.

It is not faith, but ignorance and disobedience that thinks words, rather than the use of means which a sovereign God has supplied, can bring about wellness.

Isaiah told Hezekiah that God would heal him, but also that he had to apply the plaster of figs to his boil. Had he been disobedient, and said, "Isaiah has already spoken wellness over me," he would have worsened and died. In that sense his tongue, abusing the promise of God and making excuses for ignoring his responsibility, would have been the death of him.
