Parish of St James & St John, Longton

Parish of St James & St John, Longton We are a friendly, welcoming church serving a large area of Longton, one of the six pottery towns of Stoke-on-Trent.

Originally two parishes, St John the Baptist and St James the Less, the one parish was created when St John's Church was closed and subsequently demolished because of subsidence. Later, a new rectory was built on the St John's site, including an oratory chapel, thus maintaining a church presence on the site. More recently, the parish has joined with the parish of Holy Trinity, Meir, forming the new United Benefice of Longton and Meir.

Lord, you have taught us

Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Today is the First Sunday after Trinity; we are now in the 'green' season, or 'ordinary time'.

O God,
the strength of all those who put their trust in you,
mercifully accept our prayers
and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature
we can do no good thing without you,
grant us the help of your grace,
that in the keeping of your commandments
we may please you both in will and deed;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Today is Trinity Sunday, when we reflect that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit - three persons in one God. We send fraternal greetings to to our friends at Holy Trinity Church, Meir - part of our joint benefice of Longton and Meir.

Almighty and everlasting God,
you have given us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity
and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity:
keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
