BISHOP ROUTER ANNOUNCES CLERICAL CHANGES 2026 | DIOCESE OF DERRY

Bishop Router has announced the following clerical changes for the Diocese of Derry, effective from Friday, 30th October 2026:

Rev Eamon McDevitt, PP Dunamanagh, to retire

Rev Paul Fraser, PP Ardstraw West & Castlederg, PP Langfield and PP Termonamongan, to be PP Drumragh

Rev Chris McDermott, Adm Granaghan, CC Kilrea & Desertoghill and CC Errigal, to be PP Ardstraw West & Castlederg, PP Langfield and PP Termonamongan
Rev James Devine, CC Ardstraw East, CC Badoney Upper, CC Badoney Lower and CC Greencastle, to be Adm Granaghan, CC Kilrea & Desertoghill and CC Errigal

Bishop Router notified that Very Rev Michael Canny, PP Glendermott and Adm Strathfoyle, and Rev Paul McCafferty were recently reappointed as Vicars General.

Bishop Router confirmed the re-appointment and appointment of a number of clergy in the role of Vicar Forane:

Very Rev Peter Madden, as Vicar Forane for County Derry Deanery
Very Rev Kevin McElhennon, as Vicar Forane for the County Tyrone Deanery
Very Rev Paul Farren, Adm St Eugene's Cathedral, to be in addition Vicar Forane of the Derry City Deanery

Rev David O'Kane is retiring as Vicar Forane for the Derry City Deanery, while remaining as Adm Claudy.

Bishop Router thanks the priests of the Diocese for their continued ministry and service, and sends his good wishes to those taking up new appointments. He also thanks the people of the Diocese for their prayers and support for their clergy, and encourages them to warmly welcome their new priests in the coming weeks.

Happy Sunday everyone!

Imagine receiving an invitation to the greatest celebration of your life - and discovering that your place has already been prepared. That is what Jesus tells us today. God wants us at his table. We are invited. We are wanted. We belong.

And that invitation begins here, at Mass. Jesus himself welcomes us and feeds us with his Body and Blood. Whatever burdens we bring - grief, worry, loneliness, or simply the weariness of everyday life - Isaiah reminds us that God has something wonderful in store: a heavenly banquet where he will wipe away our tears.

But the Gospel asks an uncomfortable question: Am I wearing the wedding garment?

How am I wearing my Christianity? Would we want to be like that guest who was thrown out? Because he was not wearing the wedding garment, he found himself in the dark, isolated from the joy of the party. Yes, he was physically there, but by not wearing the garment, by not being properly prepared, his mind and his heart was not in it...he didn’t really care about preparing himself as the occasion deserved. His silence said it all...it was his attitude that left him in the dark.

At Baptism, we received a white garment, an outward sign of our Christian dignity. That little christening garment may be long put away, but the calling remains: to carry Christ’s love into our homes, our conversations and our choices.

St Paul gives us our wardrobe: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience - and over everything, love.

We put on that garment whenever we listen to someone who is lonely, hold back a hurtful word, offer forgiveness, or help without expecting thanks.

And if our garment has become stained, we need not despair. God’s mercy can cleanse it. In Confession, he gives us the grace to begin again.

There is a place prepared for you at God’s table. This is about more than turning up. It is about allowing the love of Christ to change how we live. Today, let us say yes with our hearts as well as our presence - and leave this church wearing the love we have received.
