There’s a story of a school bully who was giving one of his classmates a hard time. Nobody dared confront him; his mates simply laughed along and followed his example. One day after school, a schoolmate who occasionally played football with him caught up with him.

“Can I say something to you,” he said. “What you’re doing to that boy isn’t right, and you know it.” The bully laughed it off. “Well, I’m clever enough not to let the teachers see me.” His friend replied: “Maybe. But do you think God doesn’t see you?”

They went their separate ways. The conversation was over - but those words stayed with him. For the first time he began to see himself as he really was. He realised that people were more afraid of him than friendly with him. And he decided to change.

A few years later, that young man was preaching at his first Mass - Yes, he had become a priest! Sitting in the front pew was the friend who had challenged him. He thanked him publicly: “He had the courage to show me what I was becoming. In a 30-second conversation he planted the seed of what you see now.”

And perhaps the most important question is: what if his friend had said nothing? Speaking up was awkward, but he cared enough to tell him the truth.

That is the challenge of today’s readings. God tells Ezekiel to warn his brother. Jesus says, “If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone.” Not behind his/her back, not on Facebook, not with everyone else - go to that person.

And St Paul tells us how: with love, because “love cannot hurt your neighbour.” Sometimes love means having the courage to speak the truth gently - and the humility to hear it ourselves. A few seconds of loving truth can change a life.
