St George's, Shirley

St George's, Shirley St George's is a Church of England serving the people of Shirley. This area has a speaker system so you are still able to be involved in the service.

We are part of Croydon Addington Deanery (http://www.southwark.anglican.org/parishes/croydon-addington) in the Diocese of Southwark. Sunday services are 8am BCP Eucharist (said), and 10am Sung Parish Eucharist followed by refreshments in the church hall. At 10am there is wide provision for children and young people:
Toddler Church, age 0-3: There is a well-resourced children's area at the back of

the church where adults with young babies/toddlers are welcome during the service if you feel they need a change of scene. Changing facilities are available in the church hall (although many parents just change their baby in the corner!). Junior Church, age 3-10: Junior Church meet in the Church Hall during the 10am service. Their session may include stories, prayers, craft activities, music etc. The children then come into church during communion for a blessing. Before the end of the service Junior Church have the opportunity to share what they have been doing with the rest of the congregation. (The 2nd Sunday of the month is an all-age Eucharist and all children stay in the service, often leading many parts of it.) Youth Church, age 11-16: 1st and 3rd Sundays, Youth Church start in the church at 10am then go to the Choir Vestry during the first hymn. Here they have their own session with teaching, discussion, reflection, prayer etc. They return to their families (or friends!) in time for communion. On the 2nd and 5th Sundays they stay in church with their families, and on the 4th Sunday they take active roles in running the service.

Dear All

Tomorrow we will celebrate Pentecost, this takes place 50 days after Easter when the Holy Spirit came as tongues of fire and rested on each of the disciples. This rush of the Spirit enabled them to proclaim the gospel message in different languages - and so the message of Jesus Christ was shared among diverse peoples in all corners of the world. We give thanks that the gift of the Holy Spirit is for us too, may we be confident to share the message of God's love in our communities.

The service will be live-streamed on the YouTube channel at 10.00 am.

Dear All

Tomorrow is the 7th Sunday of Easter. As we continue to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ we give thanks that God's Spirit remains with us. In our reading from the Acts of the Apostles we hear these words from Jesus:

'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.' When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

Please stay for coffee after the service as we hold our APCM in the Church Hall and elect our Churchwardens and PCC for the coming year. This is a time to give thanks for all that has been and to look forward to what lies ahead.

The service will be live-streamed on the YouTube channel at 10.00 am.

Dear All

Tomorrow is the Fifth Sunday of Easter. Our Gospel reading from John offers us the theme of abiding in God. Jesus says: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

We give thanks that abiding in the household of God means there is room for everyone in all our diversity, and heaven is the place where we find our eternal home. When God seems distant and our hearts are troubled, we can always turn to the one who is the way, the truth, and the life.

The service will be live-streamed on the YouTube channel at 10.00 am.
