If we feel awkward about making the sign of the cross in public, let us listen to St. Nikolaj Velimirovich: “It is not of any value to us how the world is going to regard or call us. Yet, it is important how the holy angels in the heavens will regard and call us when, after death, we meet with them. This is crucial, and everything else is nothing. Whoever does not believe in the Living God, nor in eternal life, nor in the Incarnation of the Lord Christ, nor in Christ’s Resurrection, nor in the Gospel’s truth, nor in God’s eternal mercy and justice – is it any wonder if they consider that one a fool who does believe in all of this? May every one of us who cross ourselves with the Sign of the Cross not only find it easy to endure but with satisfaction receive the name ‘fool’ for Christ’s sake! Let us rejoice and be glad if the non-believers call us such, for that means that we are close to Christ and far away from the non-believers.”

Τι σημαίνει να ακολουθώ τον Ιησού βαστάζοντας το σταυρό μου, δηλαδή να ζω σταυρικά; Ο Φαναρίου Αγαθάγγελος απαντά: «Αναλαμβάνω εκούσιους πόνους, στερήσεις, αγώνες για την αγάπη προς τον Θεό. Ο Ίδιος ο Κύριος μάς δίδαξε ότι στενή η πύλη και τεθλιμμένη η οδός του Ευαγγελίου. Με τη νηστεία, την αγρυπνία, την ευλογημένη ορθόδοξη άσκηση πολιτεύεται ο Χριστιανός. Για να ζει ως εικόνα του Θεού, για να μη χρησιμοποιεί τον κόσμο καταναλωτικά, αλλά ευχαριστιακά.»

As we take up our cross, let us invest it with hope; St Seraphim of Sarov said: “Just as the Lord is solicitous about our salvation, so too the murderer of men, the devil, strives to lead us into despair. A lofty and sound soul does not despair over misfortunes, of whatever sort they may be. Our life is as it were a house of temptations and trials; but we will not renounce the Lord for as long as He allows the tempter to remain with us and for as long as we must wait to be revived through patience and secure passionlessness! Judas the betrayer was fainthearted and unskilled in battle, and so the enemy, seeing his despair, attacked him and forced him to hang himself, but Peter, a firm rock, when he fell into great sin, like one skilled in battle, did not despair nor lose heart, but shed bitter tears from a burning heart, and the enemy, seeing these tears, his eyes scorched as by fire, fled far from him wailing in pain.”

Τι σημαίνει να ακολουθώ τον Ιησού βαστάζοντας το σταυρό μου, δηλαδή να ζω σταυρικά; Ο Φαναρίου Αγαθάγγελος απαντά: «Υπομένω τις ακούσιες δοκιμασίες της ζωής καρτερικά και ευχαριστιακά. Οι οδυνηρές κι ανίατες ασθένειες, ο θάνατος προσφιλών μας προσώπων, η αδικία, η αχαριστία, η περιφρόνηση, η πτωχεία και άλλες δοκιμασίες αποτελούν ευκαιρίες που, αν τις χρησιμοποιήσουμε σωστά, μας συσταυρώνουν και συνεγείρουν με τον Χριστό. Αν αγανακτήσουμε και περάσουμε τα όρια ζημιωνόμαστε πνευματικά. Αν τις δεχθούμε παθητικά, γιατί δεν μπορούμε να κάνουμε διαφορετικά, πάλι δεν ωφελούμεθα. Αν όμως τις δεχθούμε ως επίσκεψη του Θεού και ως ευκαιρίες για την πνευματική μας τελείωση, μας ανεβάζει στο ύψος των αγίων μαρτύρων. Ένας γέροντας είπε χαρακτηριστικά: Ένα δόξα σοι ο Θεός, την ώρα που πονάμε, έχει μεγαλύτερη αξία από χίλια Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, όταν δεν πονάμε.»

What does it mean to take up your cross? St Nikolaj Velimirovich answers: “It means the willing acceptance, at the hand of Providence, of every means of healing, bitter though it may be, that is offered. Do great catastrophes fall on you? Be obedient to God’s will, as Noah was. Is sacrifice demanded of you? Give yourself into God’s hands with the same faith as Abraham had when he went to sacrifice his son. Is your property ruined? Do your children die suddenly? Suffer it all with patience, cleaving to God in your heart, as Job did. Do your friends forsake you, and you find yourself surrounded by enemies? Bear it all without grumbling, and with faith that God’s help is at hand, as the Apostles did.”

Απαρνούμαι τον παλαιό άνθρωπο και αγωνίζομαι να ξεριζώσω από μέσα μου τα αμαρτωλά και εγωϊστικά πάθη, τον εγωκεντρισμό, τη φιλαυτία. Μορφές της φιλαυτίας είναι: η ολιγοπιστία, η απιστία, η αδιαφορία για τον συνάνθρωπο και το χειρότερο η εκμετάλλευσή του, η φιληδονία και η σαρκολατρεία· η απληστία και η φιλαργυρία· η μνησικακία και η συκοφαντία και κάθε ενέργεια, με την οποία πληγώνουμε και στενοχωρούμε τον συνάνθρωπο, η φιλοδοξία και ματαιοδοξία.»

The Holy Cross is a way of life leading to salvation. St Clement of Alexandria wrote: “The one who knows God will follow the Lord’s footsteps, bearing the cross of the Saviour. It is said, ‘The world is crucified to Him and He to the world.’ The Lord says, ‘Whoever loses their life for My sake will save it.’ We can ‘lose our lives’ in one of two ways. First, we can risk our lives just as the Lord did for us. Secondly, we can separate our lives from the customary things of this world. Bearing the cross means separating our souls from the delights and pleasures of this life. If you do this, you will find your life again, resting in the hope of what is to come. Dying to ourselves means being content with life’s necessities. When we want more than these necessities, it is easy to sin.”
