On the cover, 1925: Lieutenant Commander Bowes-Lyon of the Royal Navy, equerry to Prince George, marries Miss M. C. Russell, and the swords go up in the church doorway.

1923: The Honourable J. H. Bruce, son of Lord Aberdare, marries Cynthia Grant Duff Ainslie.

1923: Arthur Guinness marries Patience Wright, daughter of E. F. Wright, who played cricket for Gloucestershire.

1926: J. C. I. McConnel marries Miss E. Po***ck.

1926: Nora Mond, daughter of Sir Alfred Mond, marries John Buckland.

1936: Edward Morley-Fletcher marries Elizabeth Gregson.

1936: William Cadogan (later the 7th Earl Cadogan), married the Honourable Primrose Yarde-Buller. Wiliam would later serve as Patron and churchwarden of Holy Trinity.

1938: Lord Avebury marries Cecily Kathleen Sparrow.

1949: P. Hutchinson and his bride, formerly Miss M. G. Seymour, photographed under the church noticeboard.

1950: John Verney marries Marjorie Evans, a model and a solicitor's daughter. This is the one photograph we have not been able to trace in the press archives, so the names and date are as they came to us. If you know the couple, please tell us.

On the cover, 1923: Lieutenant Peveril William-Powlett of the Royal Navy marries Helen Crombie, and his brother officers make an arch of swords over the church steps. He ended his naval career a vice-admiral, Commander-in-Chief of the South Atlantic.

1927: Sir Joseph Bradley and Miss Protheroe at the gates.

1927: Lieutenant Colonel Hewitt and Miss Hibbert, with six small bridesmaids on the step.

1933: Captain Paterson of the Highland Light Infantry marries Brenda Roberts, with the pipers out on the pavement.

1933: Barbara Liddell marries Peter Martineau. Her aunt was in the congregation: Alice Hargreaves, born Alice Liddell, the little girl who asked for a story on a boating trip and was given Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The man who wrote it for her, Charles Dodgson, published it as Lewis Carroll.

1936: Lady Prudence Jellicoe, daughter of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, who commanded the Grand Fleet at Jutland, leaves through a guard of honour of Girl Guides. Her parents had married in this church in 1902.

1949: Carole Carr, the radio singer, marries Peter Leuw.

This week marks 135 years since the first organ was installed at Holy Trinity, and our Director of Music, Max, gave the occasion the tune it deserves.

The original was unveiled on 7 July 1891 by Dr George Martin, organist of St Paul’s Cathedral. Sedding, a fine organist himself, built its chamber more than forty feet high so the largest pipes, all thirty-two feet of them, could stand upright. In the early years it was blown by four hydraulic engines fed from a seven-inch water main, meaning it could become unplayable when the pressure dropped.

The instrument has been rebuilt three times since. After Harrison and Harrison of Durham finished their work in 2012 it has 71 stops and around 4,200 pipes, making it one of the largest organs in any English parish church.

You do not need to be able to read music or be a professional singer to come to Songs and Soup. That is rather the point.

Every Tuesday at 1pm, a roomful of people of all ages turn up to sing together for the fun of it. Max keeps it moving from the front, and we promise his ire is reserved for the pianist, never the singers 😉

Today marks 104 years since the parish dedicated this chapel to its dead of the First World War. F C Eden built it behind the south choir stalls and lined it in walnut, with the names of the fallen set in gold on blue beneath the years 1914 to 1918.

It remembers more than one war. The chapel also holds a memorial to those killed in the Second World War including a special memorial to five women of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, killed by enemy action in the Second World War.

Today the church keeps the birth of St John the Baptist, and his is one of only three births in the calendar; the others belong to Christ at Christmas and the Virgin Mary in September. The feast sits at midsummer, six months before Christmas, and preachers since Augustine have enjoyed the arrangement: after John’s feast the days begin to shorten, while after Christ’s they lengthen. St John himself said it first. “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

He was the son of Elizabeth, cousin of the Virgin Mary, and the priest Zechariah, born to them in old age.  He is often depicted in art with a lamb, after his words on seeing Jesus: “Behold the Lamb of God.” He is a patron of those preparing for baptism and of converts; tailors claim him too, on the strength of the camel hair, and the Order of St John, whose ambulances you may have seen, is dedicated to him.

At Holy Trinity he stands in the right-hand alcove of the marble reredos, beside the crucified Christ at the centre and the Virgin and Child to the left. It was carved by John Tweed, a Chelsea resident sometimes called the British Rodin. And by happy coincidence, it was on this feast day in 1954 that the church was listed Grade I.
