Roger Sayer played the organ on Hans Zimmer's score for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. On Friday 11th December he returns to Holy Trinity to play the soundtrack live, alongside music from other science fiction films.

The evening includes a Q and A with Roger. It begins at 7pm and finishes at about 8.45pm.

Today, 18 October, the Church keeps the feast of St Luke the Evangelist.

Luke was a physician and a companion of St Paul. Paul calls him “the beloved physician” in his letter to the Colossians, and near the end of his life wrote from prison, “Only Luke is with me.” Luke wrote the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, which together make up more of the New Testament than the work of any other writer.

Much of what we hear and sing in church comes to us from Luke alone. The parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son appear only in his Gospel, as do three of the great canticles: the Magnificat, the Benedictus and the Nunc Dimittis. The Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis are sung here at Choral Evensong on Sunday evenings.

Tradition holds that Luke painted the first icon of the Virgin Mary, which is why he is the patron saint of artists as well as doctors. His symbol is the winged ox, one of the four living creatures in the books of Ezekiel and Revelation. The ox was an animal of sacrifice, a fittinsign for a Gospel that opens with a priest at prayer in the Temple.

In our sanctuary Luke stands to the right of the high altar, pen in hand, beside his ox. The carving is by F C Eden, from the late 1930s.

Today we celebrate the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, who died on the evening of 3 October 1226. He is remembered for his love of all God's creatures, so here are some of ours.

Our architect, John Dando Sedding, designed the marble pulpit, where birds perch at the corners among carved roses.

On the choir stalls, the sculptor F.W. Pomeroy filled a panel with jungle animals: an elephant, a lion, a lioness and a deer. An elephant and a bird are carved on the armrests nearby.

High on a pillar, an owl sits among stone leaves.

In the east window, Elijah stands beneath the raven that fed him in the wilderness, and St Agnes holds her lamb.

Sedding brought plants, birds and small animals into his office so his craftsmen could work from life.

The Holy Trinity Consort, conducted by Max Barley, sings Frank Martin's Mass for Double Choir, written in secret and kept in a drawer for forty years. After the interval, Fauré's Requiem.

1936: William Cadogan (later the 7th Earl Cadogan), married the Honourable Primrose Yarde-Buller. Wiliam would later serve as Patron and churchwarden of Holy Trinity.

1938: Lord Avebury marries Cecily Kathleen Sparrow.

1949: P. Hutchinson and his bride, formerly Miss M. G. Seymour, photographed under the church noticeboard.

1950: John Verney marries Marjorie Evans, a model and a solicitor's daughter. This is the one photograph we have not been able to trace in the press archives, so the names and date are as they came to us. If you know the couple, please tell us.

On the cover, 1923: Lieutenant Peveril William-Powlett of the Royal Navy marries Helen Crombie, and his brother officers make an arch of swords over the church steps. He ended his naval career a vice-admiral, Commander-in-Chief of the South Atlantic.

1927: Sir Joseph Bradley and Miss Protheroe at the gates.

1927: Lieutenant Colonel Hewitt and Miss Hibbert, with six small bridesmaids on the step.

1933: Captain Paterson of the Highland Light Infantry marries Brenda Roberts, with the pipers out on the pavement.

1933: Barbara Liddell marries Peter Martineau. Her aunt was in the congregation: Alice Hargreaves, born Alice Liddell, the little girl who asked for a story on a boating trip and was given Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The man who wrote it for her, Charles Dodgson, published it as Lewis Carroll.

1936: Lady Prudence Jellicoe, daughter of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, who commanded the Grand Fleet at Jutland, leaves through a guard of honour of Girl Guides. Her parents had married in this church in 1902.

1949: Carole Carr, the radio singer, marries Peter Leuw.

This week marks 135 years since the first organ was installed at Holy Trinity, and our Director of Music, Max, gave the occasion the tune it deserves.

The original was unveiled on 7 July 1891 by Dr George Martin, organist of St Paul’s Cathedral. Sedding, a fine organist himself, built its chamber more than forty feet high so the largest pipes, all thirty-two feet of them, could stand upright. In the early years it was blown by four hydraulic engines fed from a seven-inch water main, meaning it could become unplayable when the pressure dropped.

The instrument has been rebuilt three times since. After Harrison and Harrison of Durham finished their work in 2012 it has 71 stops and around 4,200 pipes, making it one of the largest organs in any English parish church.

You do not need to be able to read music or be a professional singer to come to Songs and Soup. That is rather the point.

Every Tuesday at 1pm, a roomful of people of all ages turn up to sing together for the fun of it. Max keeps it moving from the front, and we promise his ire is reserved for the pianist, never the singers 😉
