The Parish of St Vedast is known from the 12th century, and the church is traditionally claimed to have been established by 1170. It has been altered, enlarged and restored many times and probably rebuilt at least twice, the last time by Christopher Wren, after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Having been completely burnt out during the Blitz of World War II, the church was restored under the dir

ection of its Rector, Canon Mortlock, and a very influential Parochial Church Council that included Poet Laureate John Betjeman and master organ builder, Noel Mander.

The Venerable Luke Miller, Archdeacon of London, recently visited our daughter Church, St Anne and St Agnes in the City of London, where he blessed the new spire and weathervane, which have been rebuilt following extensive restoration work made possible due to a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

The blessing took place atop the spire overlooking the city, where Archdeacon Luke was joined by Revd Paul Kennedy, our newly installed priest-in-charge at St Vedast Church, within whose parish St Anne and St Agnes lies and Churchwarden Richard Batchelor who has masterminded the project. Also in attendance was a representative of the architects responsible for the restoration, as well as Paul Smith, CEO of the musical charity, Voices Cantabiles Music (VCM), which uses St Anne and St Agnes Church as its base of operations.

Archdeacon Luke said of the blessing: “I am glad to see St Anne and St Agnes church looking so splendid and thank and congratulate all those involved for making the restoration possible on all their hard work. I was delighted to be able to bless the church’s new spire and weathervane, which gleamed brightly in the summer sun, representing a new chapter in the life of this historic church. “

We hope everyone had a blessed Palm Sunday! Yesterday's service featured a dramatized reading of the Passion according to Matthew.

Our Holy Week Services will be as follows:

Monday (10 April) at 18:15 - a short (20 minute) service of the word at Saint Anne and Saint Agnes, marking the start of Passover (the Jewish festival which provided the historical context for the events of Christ's passion and crucifixion).

Maundy Thursday (13 April) at 19:00 - a service of Tenebrae at St Vedast. An atmospheric and reflective interweaving of scripture readings and choral music, and light and dark, meditating on the events of the Last Supper and Jesus' arrest.

Good Friday (14 April) at Noon - the way of the Cross. A service of prayer and meditation at the foot of the Cross.

Easter Day (16 April) at 11:00 - our joyous celebration of the Resurrection begins in our daughter church of Saint Anne & Saint Agnes with the lighting of the new fire of the Resurrection. From there, we process behind the Paschal candle to Saint Vedast, for a full choral Eucharist.
