St Mary's Church, Barnes

St Mary's Church, Barnes Anglican parish church in the heart of Barnes which plays an integral role in the local community There is a wide range of activities on offer.

The Church of England exists to serve others and its members strive to contribute to a more just and compassionate world. At St Mary's Barnes, we are committed to serving the needs of people locally, nationally and internationally by supporting groups and organisations, financially and with our time. We are currently supporting the following charities with prayer, funds and practical support:

Age

UK Richmondโ€™s Barnes Green Centre:
The Barnes Green Centre has nearly 400 members who always receive a warm welcome from the staff and volunteers. Members meet new people, take up a hobby or just have a cup of coffee, learn new subjects, maintain or improve their fitness, have a delicious lunch and become part of the Barnes community through events or volunteering. Many activities are related to physical health, including falls awareness, low or high impact exercise, Pilates and Tai Chi. Health checks are on offer, acupuncture, therapies and chiropody and all at subsidised rates. The sessions, including computer classes in a new IT suite, also stimulate the mind. Others encourage social interaction, such as art classes, talks and excursions or simply to have some fun. The FiSH Voluntary Community Care Scheme also has an office in the Centre

Castelnau Centre Project aims to promote a vibrant, self sustaining community in the Castelnau area of North Barnes. The Project manages a large programme of community development projects designed to meet the needs of its local residents of all ages, from a playgroup through after-school clubs and substantial provision for teenagers, to training for adults; and including social activities for all ages. 300-400 people a week use the Centre. The Project aims to move increasingly towards the community helping itself, rather than the Project being a provider of services, although the core programme would continue. Christian Aid is an international development charity, supported by the churches in Britain and Ireland, that insists that the world can and must be swiftly changed to one where everyone can live a full life, free from poverty. It works globally for eradication of the causes of poverty, striving to achieve equality, dignity and freedom for all, regardless of faith or nationality. It provides urgent, practical assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes. Its work is founded on Christian faith, inspired by hope and acts to change an unjust world through charity โ€“ a practical love and care for our neighbours

FiSH stands for friendship, independence, support and help. It is a voluntary community care scheme offering help with practical tasks, support and friendship to anyone in need in Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen. It provides a helpline; transport door to door for hospital and GP visits, weekly shopping trips and outings; and a befriending and social listening service.

What a joy to welcome Albert and Xander into their new life as Christians during our All Age Eucharist this morning.

We sang out "will you love the you you hide" as we thought about Jesus calling those who we least expect to follow him.

A great morning at church!

On Sunday we bid farewell to our Associate Priest James Marston. James is heading off to East London to take on his own parish in Little Ilford, St Mary's loss is their gain.

It was wonderful to raise a glass, share gifts and a lot of laughter, summing up the fun and friendship that James has brought to the parish in his time here โœ๏ธ

The Bishop of Southwark announced this morning that Amelia Turncliffe had been appointed as Assistant Curate at St Mary's Barnes. She will join us here as our curate after her ordination at the end of June.

We are delighted to have Amelia joining us and pray for her and her husband Tom as they prepare for their move to Barnes.

Amelia was born and raised in Worcester, and grew up attending Worcester Cathedral. She studied Divinity at The University of Edinburgh, where she met her husband, Tom, and a masters at Union Theological Seminary in New York. After moving to London, Amelia worked for Christian Aid, Churches Together in England and the Church of England, including at both Church House and Lambeth Palace. During this time she discerned a calling to the priesthood. She has been training for ordination at Westcott House in Cambridge. In her spare time she enjoys reading, going to the theatre and most of all spending time with friends.

Yes, that's St Paul's Cathedral and yes that's our Rector preaching!

It was a joy to be there to hear his words resonating into that historic space. Points to the first person to guess what Calum told us was his dream job as a child...? A cracking opening to his sermon.

Great music and great atmosphere! All round great afternoon ๐Ÿ•

What an honour to be at this afternoon as the joint choir's of St Mary's and sung evensong. They truly did themselves proud as their singing soared out in the beautiful setting.

As if this occasion wasn't special enough, two of our wonderful parishioners (one choir member) were celebrating their birthdays today so we finished with some cake in the retroquire!

With great sorrow, I write to let you know that Bishop Richard died peacefully yesterday morning, following a short illness. Richard came to Barnes after his retirement as Bishop of Oxford in 2006, having bought a house in the parish during his time as Dean of Kingโ€™s College, London.

Richard has been a member of our congregations since then, and is much loved in this parish and beyond. His support of the parish has been great and his influence profound. Richard served with grace and humility a God whom he knew as his Saviour and Companion.

We will miss him dearly as a preacher, teacher, and friend.

Our prayers are with Richardโ€™s wife and wider family.

There is a book of condolence set up in church and the midday Eucharist today will be in Richardโ€™s honour.

It was a joy to welcome the St Mary's Scouts along to our St George's Day celebrations on Sunday!

It's always a lovely service as the scouts (both current and past) stood to renew their promises. The link with our scout group is very important to us and we are always thrilled when they can come to our services.

As they helped us spot the flags that can identify us, we were encouraged to think about the flag of the resurrection, and to celebrate that Jesus rose again and saved us all.

On Sunday it was announced that The Rev'd James Marston, Associate Priest of St Mary's and St Michael's has been appointed as Rector of St Michael's & All Angels with St Mary the Virgin, Manor Park (Little Ilford).

The date for James' licensing is still to be set. His last service in Barnes will be Sunday 31 May.

James is a very well loved priest, having served as our associate priest for the last 3 and a half years. James is a dedicated pastoral visitor and a witty and insightful preacher: Barnes' loss is Manor Park's gain.

There will be celebrations for James at both churches, with details to follow. Donations towards his leaving gift will be accepted at both churches.

Please do pray for James, as he prepares for this next journey in his ministry.

We are certain you have admired our beautiful churchyard as you walk past. We are very blessed with an amazing gardening team who meet on Saturday mornings and maintain this space each week. Their hard work is not overlooked as we enjoy the beauty of God's creation in our church.

BUT we need to grow our team. If you, or someone you know is green fingered, or keen to learn, please do come along this Saturday. The team will be offering tours and explanations and if that wasn't enough, cake will be on offer!
