Clergy Retirement Dignity and Fairness Review: Call for Evidence
The Church of England’s Archbishops’ Council has commissioned an independently chaired Clergy Retirement Dignity and Fairness Review following a request from the General Synod. The Review will examine what clergy and their dependants need in order to experience a dignified, fair, and financially secure retirement, and the extent to which current arrangements across the Church of England support that aim.

The Terms of Reference ask the Review Group to consider a range of issues, including:

how well the present pension, stipend and retirement‑housing arrangements meet the needs of retired clergy;
whether some groups of clergy are disadvantaged by the current system;
how diocesan and national approaches differ;
what can be learned from comparable professions and sectors;
what realistic, affordable improvements the Church might prioritise for the future; and
which theological principles should underpin current clergy remuneration and retirement provision

Further details about the Review can be accessed here: https://www.churchofengland.org/about/governance/national-church-institutions/archbishops-council/clergy-retirement-dignity-and-fairness-review

To inform this work, the Review Group is seeking evidence, data, and insight from those organisations and individuals with relevant experience or expertise. We are particularly interested in patterns, examples, and information that can illuminate the questions set out in the Terms of Reference.

Please note that this Call for Evidence is not a route for raising individual complaints, which should instead be directed through existing diocesan or national processes – we are not able to respond to individual cases raised through this Call for Evidence. We welcome reflections that draw on personal experience where these help to demonstrate broader issues, trends or themes.

We invite you to complete any or all of the sections in the form below to provide evidence to inform the review. There is an opportunity to add any additional comments not covered by the questions at the end. We recognise that some will be responding to this Call for Evidence on behalf of an organisation or network and others as individuals, and that individuals may not wish to answer all of the questions. Please feel free to just respond to the questions that are relevant to you.

Respondents are encouraged to use the webform below wherever possible. However, it is also possible to email responses to [email protected].

Completing the webform form – important information

The webform does not currently save responses after each question, or if you navigate away from the form. We are working to try to address this swiftly.

In the meantime, here is a link to the questions contained in the form in a Word document: https://view.officeapps.live.com/op/view.aspx?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.churchofengland.org%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2F2026-05%2Fcall-for-evidence-questions.docx&wdOrigin=BROWSELINK

Respondents may wish to complete their answers in the Word document before uploading them to the form, especially if you wish to complete your response in more than one sitting.

Also, here is a link to the chapter of Generosity and Sacrifice referred to in the question on theological basis:https://www.churchofengland.org/sites/default/files/2026-04/generosity-and-sacrifice-chapter-2.pdf

You are encouraged to access and download the chapter before completing the form if you wish to respond to that question.

Please submit responses by 23:59 on Sunday, 31 May.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute. Your evidence will play an important role in helping the Review Group develop fair, practical, and well‑informed recommendations for a report to General Synod in early 2027.

Rector of St Mary with St George, Hornsey

We are a diverse, inclusive parish in North London and we value liturgical tradition alongside creativity, stillness and openness and we warmly welcome people from across the spectrum of church backgrounds. We are a well-resourced parish with an engaged Ministry Team, committed choir, active volunteers and flexible buildings, including our modern parish church and the historic St Mary’s Tower. Our recent Open Door project has improved accessibility and energised community engagement and we work closely with our church primary school and local YMCA hostel.

We are looking for a Rector who is:

• Formed in the Anglo-Catholic tradition and theologically inclusive,
• Able to engage a diverse congregation and has a vision for growth,
• A collaborative leader, able to nurture lay ministry and support curates,
• Pastorally attentive, with a heart for the vulnerable and marginalised,
• Able to work constructively with schools, charities and partner churches.

The rector will be on a full stipend with a spacious 4-bedroom rectory and beautiful garden very close to the church nestled between the vibrant neighbourhoods of Muswell Hill, Crouch End and at the edge of the leafy Alexandra Palace Park.

Hornsey is a parish of diversity and opportunity. We are praying for a Rector who will help us discern God’s call for the next chapter of our shared life and witness.

Bishop Anderson Jeremiah reflects on the Good Samaritan and racial justice, showing how Jesus redefines neighbourly love beyond boundaries, names racism as a distortion of the Imago Dei, and calls the Church to active mercy, justice, and solidarity in a fragmented and divided world.
