The King's Chapel of the Savoy

The King's Chapel of the Savoy Situated off the Strand in London, the Chapel belongs to His Majesty The King in His Right as Duke of Lancaster. The Duchy of Lancaster appoints the Chaplain.

The King’s Chapel of the Savoy has a long association with the Duchy of Lancaster. The Chapel is the last surviving building of a hospital founded by Henry VII for homeless people in 1512. It stands on the area of London known as the Savoy. The Chapel belongs to His Majesty The King in His Right as Duke of Lancaster. It is a ‘free’ chapel or ‘peculiar’ not falling within any bishop’s jurisdiction,

but remaining firmly within the Church of England. The Chapel remains an important part of the Savoy Estate, the Duchy of Lancaster’s principal London land holding. It continues to provide spiritual service to the community, as it has done for over 500 years. The King’s Chapel of the Savoy is also the chapel of the Royal Victorian Order, an Order of Chivalry within the Sovereign’s personal gift. By The King’s appointment, the present Chaplain is also Chaplain of the Order. The expenses of the Chapel are borne by The King in Right of His Duchy of Lancaster. Maintenance of this historic building remains the Duchy of Lancaster’s responsibility. Recent work has included the landscaping of the gardens in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee, and the restoration of the Chapel ceiling in 1999. Members of the public are most welcome to attend services in The King’s Chapel of the Savoy. The Chapel is open Monday to Thursday 9am to 4pm and for Sunday service at 11am. However, it is always closed during August and September and for the first Sunday after Christmas and Easter. For more information e-mail the Steward, Richard Buck ([email protected])

On Sunday morning, the chapel celebrated the first of its' Coronation Services with the choir singing 'I was Glad' by Sir Hubert Parry and the world premiere of a 'Coronation Te Deum' by the Master of the Music, Philip Berg MVO.

In the service, the Chaplain and the Master of the Music said a fond farewell to Head Chorister, Francis. Thomas and Philip spoke of Francis’ commitment and humility in his role as Head Chorister in his final service as a member of the choir. In the first photograph, Francis is standing between (from left to right) his mother Lydia, Philip, his brother Aidan and Thomas, with Lexi stealing the show on the front row.

Following the service, the congregation celebrated the birthday of David Young who generously donated Champagne, cake and chocolates. Thomas proposed a toast and invited the congregation to sing ‘Happy Birthday’, he also spoke of the commitment made by so many in the chapel’s congregation to foster community, highlighting David’s roles as a reader and assistant at Holy Communion.

The Chapel will be celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III with a series of special services to mark the different rites of the Coronation service.

The Chapel community gathered on Sunday 10th May 1953
to perform the rites contained in a service booklet titled 'The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy, Service of Preparation for the Coronation of H. M. Queen Elizabeth II'.

70 years later we will use the music, hymns, readings, and prayers to offer thanksgiving to God for the new reign of His Majesty The King. There will be four services, each using different material
from the original order of service. There will be three services in the weeks leading up to the 6th May culminating with a special service of Thanksgiving on 7th May followed by a lunch in the chapel's garden.

Members of the public are warmly invited to attend the services.
