P***y Riot and Mary's revolutionary song of extraordinary faith!
This Sunday at St John’s N20 we will temember and give thanks for the Mary the Mother of God. So often she is presented as a gentle, quiet women bathed in blue. Maybe she was. But she was also more.
Upon receiving the message from the angel that she would give birth to the Messiah – The Son of the Most High God – Mary sang a song that put her safety and security at risk.
She proclaimed that because of the child nestled within her mortal flesh the proud would be scattered, the powerful would tumble from their thrones, the rich would be stripped of their wealth and prestige and sent away empty.
She declared that those who had been overlooked – trampled on even – would be raised gloriously high. That the hungry would be filled. Because of this child, who laid no bigger than a speck of dust in her womb, Mary knew that everything was different: that injustice and oppression will not have the last word for because of this child Gods reign will be established on earth as in heaven.
She knew well what was the risk of her song, Her words could make her destitute and deserted. They put her reputation and even her life at risk. There was no space for these words. Especially not from a women.
And yet she sang!
