Stay on the Path

The sermon presents life as a journey along a path. The path to heaven is revealed by God through the Word. It represents moral integrity, wisdom, obedience, and the choice of life over spiritual destruction. God’s truth provides light and direction, while human freedom allows each person to look toward God or turn away, but the Lord does not abandon those who become lost. Like the Good Shepherd seeking a lost sheep, He continually offers guidance and a way back.

Sermon: Dealing With Our Serious Regrets

How do we live with our regrets? It would be nice if we could say “I have no regrets” implying that we have lived a perfect life, made all the right choices and never offended or hurt another human being.

Who but the Lord has lived a perfect life?

We can live in remorse and regret. But that is not the best choice. We need to do something to make ourselves better, or rather, to allow the Lord to make us better.

Joseph’s brothers regretted selling him into slavery. They regretted telling their father he had been killed by animals.

Peter wept in regret over denying the Lord three times after boldly swearing he would never do so. But the Lord knew better. He knew that all the disciples would do the same, run and hide and deny they followed the Messiah.

What does the Lord do, if we allow Him, to relieve us, heal us and give us tools to change the regrets from a negative to a positive parts of our past?

This Sunday we will explore this question.

Sermon: Harvest of the Church

“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Matt 9:37-8)
Harvests of various sorts are mentioned throughout the Word, such as grains like wheat and barley, fruits as well as their juices like w**e and olive oil. This Harvest Sunday we will look at a different “harvest”, less spoken of but one close to the hearts of the fishermen turned disciples. Those who were to become “fishers of men”.

Sermon: The Lord tells us to “LISTEN!”

How often do we “hear” but not really pay attention, not REALLY listen? It turns out we do that a lot! That’s why the Lord doesn’t just ask, but TELLS us to listen. A lot of times that’s what we have to do with each other, too, right? Lots of times parents have to ask “Are you listening to me?” And husbands and wives often say the same thing to each other, “Did you actually hear what I just said?” Today it’s harder than ever to really pay attention and really listen. There are so many things calling out to us for our attention. “Active listening” to what is really important is an acquired skill. The Lord wants us to use it when listening to His Word to help us discern between confusing signals and competing ideologies and world views. Let’s take time this Sunday to reflect on His command to “Listen”.

Stream of Thanksgiving

People often talk about hidden treasures in everyday life. Often when things aren’t going “our way” we can grumble and complain. However, we know nothing can happen unless something good can come out of it. That can be hard to believe and if we tend toward a negative mindset we may miss the hidden blessings. This morning we’ll consider keeping an attitude of gratitude while we sail along in the stream of Providence.

Have you ever been told that faith means believing without asking too many questions?

Sometimes we can get the impression that thinking too much, questioning too much, or wanting to understand somehow gets in the way of faith. But what if the opposite is true? What if the Lord gave us our ability to think and understand as part of the way we are meant to grow in faith?
The Lord does not ask us to leave our minds behind when we come to Him. He gives us truth so that we can examine it, understand it, and allow it to shape the way we live.
Because truth is not given simply to be known. It is given to lead us toward wisdom, toward love, and finally toward a life of service.
So in today's worship, we reflect on a faith that is not afraid to think, a faith in which mind and heart, truth and love, learn to work together in following the Lord."
