Eucharistic Adoration at Our Lady of Lourdes, Wanstead

Friday 11th September morning 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. and evening 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

“Adoration is a prayer that prolongs Eucharistic celebration and communion, during which the soul continues to nourish itself: it feeds on love, on truth, on peace. It feeds on hope, because he before whom we bow does not judge us, does not crush us, but who liberates and transforms us.”

Pope Benedict XVI, Homily for Corpus Christi, May 22, 2008

A parishioner's letter to Calvin Bailey MP for Leyton and Wanstead:

Dear Mr Bailey,

Thank you for your email to constituents. However, despite your protestations of having an open mind, it's clear that MPs have decided to introduce this legislation, come what may, rather than the more costly investment required to provide adequate palliative care.

Palliative specialists have long argued for their area to be prioritised, to allow the dying to have pain-free time to come to terms with the end of life without the additional fears of suffering physically and/or feeling themselves to be a burden to family and wider society.

I'm writing this email from my hospital bed at Royal London Hospital, where I am a temporary in-patient due to complications after minor surgery last week. In my ward are three other women, all fragile emotionally, seriously unwell, frightened and over 80 years old. How many such constituents have you spoken with? These wonderful ladies are horrified and apologetic at causing "inconvenience" to their relatives and the over-worked nurses and doctors. They, and many like them, would rather die than be an inconvenience. Undeniably, many MPs agree, otherwise they would insist on sufficient funding for end-of-life care. Have you lobbied for fully-funded palliative care as an alternative to prematurely ending lives?

I know you are unlikely to be able to respond to every email but I do expect you, as my elected representative, to take my view seriously and give it equal consideration to the view that human lives can be terminated rather than made peaceful and pain-free at/near the end.

Yours sincerely,
Bridgid Joy
