Some scenes feel flat not because “nothing happens”, but because nothing meaningful is changing underneath the surface.

A strong scene doesn’t need a huge reveal or dramatic confrontation to hold a reader’s attention. Sometimes all it needs is a clear purpose, a little friction, and a reason for the moment to matter.

Good dialogue isn’t just about making characters sound exactly like people do in real life.

It’s about making every line feel like it belongs.

The strongest conversations reveal character, create tension, hide information, and sometimes say the most through what’s left unsaid.

Literary devices can do a lot of heavy lifting.

A metaphor can make an emotion tangible. Foreshadowing can quietly build tension. And sometimes, the smallest recurring image can carry an entire theme.

The trick is knowing when to use them, and when to leave them alone.

There’s no one right way to structure a story ✍️

Some writers want a handful of turning points and plenty of room to explore. Others want every beat mapped out before they write a single chapter. And sometimes, you just need a framework to help you figure out what happens next.

Whether you’re plotting your first novel or trying to untangle a draft that’s lost its way, Reedsy Studio is your go to place.

🖋️ You can plan your novel with story structure templates, organize your ideas, and start writing to reach The End.

Your story might start with a single idea…

…then come the characters, places, conflicts, and magic systems. Suddenly you have a lot to keep track of. 👀

That’s where templates can help.

Reedsy Studio gives you guided templates to explore the different pieces of your story, from developing your protagonist and building fictional worlds, to defining magic systems, themes, and stakes.

Use the questions and prompts as a starting point, skip what you don’t need, and make the planning process your own. ✍️

Want to check out these templates? Head over to Reedsy Studio here: https://reedsy.com/studio/templates/

Some of the most memorable characters in fiction aren’t the protagonist.

They’re the quirky best friend, the rival who wants to shine, the mentor who quietly carries regret.

Supporting characters shouldn’t exist just to fill space around your protagonist. They should shape the story, reveal new sides of your main character, and make the world feel like it extends beyond the page.

📌 Save this post for the next time you’re creating a cast of supporting characters.

Filter words like saw, heard, and felt aren’t inherently bad. Sometimes they’re exactly what a sentence needs. But when every sentence is filtered through your character, readers can feel one step removed from the story.

That’s why they’re one of the first things many writers look for during the editing process.
