London Buddhist Centre

London Buddhist Centre The London Buddhist Centre is at the heart of a diverse and vibrant community of Buddhist practitioners in East London.

At the London Buddhist Centre we teach Buddhism and meditation in a way that is relevant to contemporary living and provide supportive conditions for living a spiritual life. We teach Buddhism and Meditation, in person and online, in a way that is relevant to contemporary life, and we host regular retreats at Vajrasana, our retreat centre in Suffolk. We also run Breathing Space, a health and well-

being project to help manage stress, anxiety, depression and addiction recovery. And we offer daily yoga classes, events for 18-25 year-olds, for people of colour, families and put on cultural evenings at PoetryEast. We host school visits, Buddhist festivals and run two local charity shops.

Our reception and shop is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Drop in to look around the Centre, or to join a meditation class. All our regular classes are free, with donations welcome. Visit our website to see all that's on offer!

Collectively, these 4 states of being are called the Brahma Viharas. They are practices that expand the heart. “Brahma Vihara” translates to “sublime abode” or “divine dwelling”.

True open-heartedness is harder than it sounds but that’s what we’ll be doing on the Summer Retreat, Fri 7 Aug – Sun 16 Aug. Link in bio to learn more.

Theo, Zuben, Sthiramanas, Adityabadhu, Vidyadaka and Bodhimati share their personal experience of commitment and why they’re committing to the Men’s Intensive retreat this summer.

Sthiramanas will be co-leading the retreat for the second year running and is joined by Vidyadaka - one of the men’s Ordination team at Padmaloka retreat centre, who returns to the LBC where he previously taught mediation for many years.

What to expect?
‍Meditation: There will be ongoing meditation instruction in both samadhi and prajna, over four well-spaced sessions a day. We’ll gradually build up the amount of meditation as the retreat progresses.

‍Silence: We’ll have seven days in complete silence, both on and off the grounds, with plenty of time to just do nothing - precious conditions to experience the depths of consciousness

‍Meditation Reviews: Every other day you’ll have a one-to-one meditation review with an experienced order member from the team. The review is to explore your particular life and practice in depth.

‍Padmasambhava: The life story and teachings of this ‘Master of Transformation’ will be our guide as we navigate our own inner landscape. Padmasambhava is the archetypal enlightened Guru. His focus is on the complete transformation, conscious as well as unconscious, towards enlightened liberation.

This year’s Buddha Day is especially significant, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Vajrasana Retreat Centre.

The centre itself is inspired by the Buddha in the earth-touching mudra at the ‘diamond seat’ - the Vajrasana, the mythic centre of the universe.

It feels particularly fitting to gather there and honour the Buddha’s enlightenment at the very heart of this symbolic landscape.

Mudita is the ability to delight in the happiness and success of others.

In a world built on comparison and envy, this capacity to join in with another’s joy is countercultural.

Mudita is one of the ways we can train the heart, to free the mind. It’s part of what we’ll be cultivating on the Summer Retreat.

We will discover how a liberated heart can meet the world with courage and energy, on the Summer Retreat 7 - 16 Aug, learn more and book via our retreats page.
