Today in parliament, a bill will be voted on that would allow what it calls assisted dying.

An anthropologist was once asked when did civilization begin. She pointed to a 15000 year old bone that had an obvious fracture which had been healed. She said this was evidence of when civilisation began. That someone, somewhere cared for another human being and treasured their life. They took time to care for them and look after them. This was the dawn of civilisation.

Almighty God has already given us the great and beautiful command, "thou shalt not kill " It is surely the bedrock of any civilised community to safeguard the dignity of human life, to cherish it and care for it.

I understand the subjective arguments of those who want to allow this new law. No one wants to see anyone suffer.

But how we care for the vulnerable, the sick, the aged and the dying is not just about them, it's about us. We become better people when we care for others. This is part of our humanity.

The option to die very quickly becomes the obligation to die. And I know that when I am sick and dying, I do not want any government, or law, or committee to decide when I die. I have been on enough committees in my life to know that is a very bad idea.

So please pray this new bill before parliament is defeated. Life is worth living.

Just as the anthropologist thought caring for the weak was the beginning of civilisation, if this bill is passed, we would be witnessing the end of civilisation.

Life is not cheap, it is beautiful. If we forget that, then we forget everything.
