Welcome to Songs from Sunday's Service. Let's see if this will become a regular-ish slot reflecting on just one hymn from the week's service. The theme of Sunday's sermon was God's glory and our good, and how apt this song is.

It is a wonderful thing to consider that God's glory and our good are so intertwined that they appear as one. God's glory is our good, our good is to glorify God. God always acts in ways that glorify him and prove to be for our good.
This song picks up on several biblical references. Noting that the glory of God the Father is revealed in Jesus, that gazing on Jesus satisfies like nothing else can. It reminds us that we can trust the Lord and know hope in our trials even when we don't understand what's going on. The song leads us to gaze at the cross, something that the world looked on as weakness was in fact the glorious way in which our greatest good was fulfilled! The song ends in humility, may we be made nothing and may Christ be made more. The first two verses teach us to turn our eyes to Jesus and the last two verses call us to praise.
The repeated emphasis on God working "for His glory and my good" obviously echoes Romans 8:28 and Ephesians 1:11-12. What a wonderfully doctrine rich worship song to build up believers. It causes us to connect with Paul, boasting in our weakness and boasting in our Lord -2 Corinthians 12:9-10.

We had a baptism on Sunday. A baptism is always a joyful occasion. A celebration of someone's new life and their obedience to God. We praise God that he has brought another person out of darkness and into the light. For those of us who have been baptised it feels like a renewal of our vows, a reminder to us of how good God is and how blessed we are.
In a baptism service, we ask the delegate these three questions:

1. Do you believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

2. Are you trusting only in Jesus' death on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins?

3. Do you promise to follow Jesus above all others, with the help of his Spirit?

Pause and think. Can you answer "yes" to all 3 of these questions?

Phew, what a scorcher! It's hot in the city. The guidelines say we should stay at home.
What a perfect opportunity to pour yourself an ice cold drink, sit in front of a fan and refresh yourself in God's word.
Why don't you take time in this heat to slow down and read a chunk of scripture, a whole book perhaps and immerse yourself in the bible's big story?

You may feel like that deer in Psalm 42 panting for water but are you longing to know the Lord even more?
