THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER - what we do and why.

In the BCP rite that we use at St James the Gloria is at the end of Holy Communion and not near the beginning. Also the Blessed Sacrament remains in the altar and ablutions take place after the Blessing.

One of the unintentional consequences of this is that the Gloria actually becomes an act of Eucharistic devotion.

After the people have received communion the Blessed Sacrament is covered in a linen corporal after communion, indicating a real presence. At the Blessing, the Priest places his left hand on the altar when so as not to turn his back to the Sacrament.

It’s almost certainly not what Cranmer intended (there is no instruction relating to a linen cloth in his 1552 BCP) but probably what the 17th century revisers did, when adding the rubric 1662 BCP - our current Prayer Book.

People sometimes asked why some priests would hold the altar whilst giving a blessing, even when the newer rites came in. This is why.

Yesterday we had a huge clear out of the church cellar, which revealed a few forgotten treasures. Amongst them were these theee photos of St Michael’s Queenhithe, taken on the eve of its demolition in 1876, and which had lain forgotten. They are, thus, very important for the story of the City and we would love to share and eventually display them; but they are quite faded and we will probably need to raise funds for the conservation of photos and the frame.

The Rector was delighted to preach at All Saints Northampton for Oak Apple Day, a ceremony that has taken place in the town for 350 years and which involves the Mayor bestowing a wreathe in the Statue of Charles II that adorns the church. All Saints' Church, Northampton Jimmy Garlick
