Why does the Deaf Flag matter?

The Deaf Flag is more than a symbol. It represents identity, community, sign languages and a shared sense of belonging across deaf communities around the world.

Designed by French deafblind artist Arnaud Balard, the flag was officially approved by the World Federation of the Deaf in 2023.

Its design is full of meaning. The open hands represent the deaf community and sign languages, while the fingers reach beyond the borders of the flag to represent connection across the world.

The colours have meaning too. Turquoise represents the deaf community, sign language, pride and unity. Yellow represents light and life, while dark blue represents humanity and the Earth.

Perhaps most importantly, the flag creates something visible: a symbol created from within the deaf community that celebrates deaf identity as part of human diversity.

DAT reps from 2021-2026 and interpreters at the CofE General Synod (the “parliament” of the Church of England. DAT has three reps who bring a Deaf perspective to debates. For the past 5 years our reps have been Sarah Tupling, Mary Bucknall and Elaine Heath. We are very grateful for their service. )

Huge Apologies.
Thank God It’s Friday BSL 7-8pm tonight.

Due to waiting for a ‘non-existent’ bus at Crystal Palace for 2 hours …….. facing the sun 🌞 in spite of all online apps saying it was “arriving”.
Eventually, I was forced to walk uphill (bad for my knees) to catch an alternative bus home.

So despite a short rest, I’m still too unwell for this evening.

I will keep the PowerPoint slides for next week.
