Join Archbishop John Wilson for Mass on the Feast of St Pio of Pietrelcina, Wednesday 23 September, 7pm, at St George's Cathedral, Southwark. After Mass, there will be an opportunity to venerate a relic of St Padre Pio - a piece of cloth he once used to clean the wound in his side, personally received by Archbishop John from the Capuchin friars of San Giovanni Rotondo. Confession will be available during Eucharistic Adoration from 6pm, before the Mass. All are welcome.

On the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we celebrate the birth of the Mother of God. This is one of the most ancient feasts in the Catholic Church, dating back to the earliest centuries.
May Mary, our Mother and the Mother of God, guide us to imitate her faith, obedience and love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen

Fr Mark Wharton on the gift and sacrifice of priestly celibacy and what it means to share in the Cross of Christ.

Celibacy, he explains, involves a stripping away of natural securities: no wife, no children, no natural human comforts. It can be lonely. And there is a sacrifice here.

But as Fr Mark puts it so beautifully, that sacrifice makes way for something else: “Through his consecration, his service, and his willingness to enter into human suffering and pain, the celibate priest is able, by grace, to enter into the deepest places of the lives of the people he is sent to serve. In his body, he preaches the Cross of Christ to those who are crucified before him, and he sees the resurrection take place”

At the March for Life 2026, Archbishop John Wilson joined thousands in a joyful witness to the dignity of human life: from the first moments of conception to natural death.

Today we celebrate St Teresa of Calcutta, who went out and served Christ where she was needed most. Mother Teresa was never afraid of any challenge being too big. She courageously served the Lord and did what she could to help all she encountered.
We ask for St Teresa’s intercession today, especially for those joining us at the March for Life. May all who are walking in the ways of the Lord in defence of the unborn be guided by Mother Teresa’s witness to protect the defenceless child in their mother’s womb.

‘The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it’ (Psalm 24:1)

In a Pastoral Message for the Care of Creation and the March for Life, Archbishop John Wilson explains that “these two occasions concern different questions, but they arise from the same truth of our faith: all that exists comes from God”. That is why, he asks, “in defending the dignity of the natural world, how can we not defend human life when it is at its smallest, most dependent, and most defenceless?”

The Archbishop reminds us that “creation is a gift we receive from God. We do not worship creation; we worship the Creator… Creation groans because our world bears the consequences of sin. When our relationship with God becomes disordered, so do our relationships with one another. The greed, waste, violence, and selfishness that push us away from God not only harm creation, but also have damaging consequences for people who are poor and vulnerable and, so often, amongst the first to suffer”.

As Christians, Archbishop John makes clear, “we cannot speak seriously about safeguarding creation whilst treating human life as disposable… Our concern for human dignity does not end at birth. The love of Christ and the love of our neighbour require us to defend human life, to protect human dignity, and to work for justice and peace, exercising proper care for the world in which God has placed us. These concerns belong together because they spring from our obedience to the one God who is Creator and Lord”.

Join us in giving thanks to God for Pope St Gregory the Great and pray that those serving the Catholic Church in England today can lead more people to Christ.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, place your Passion, Cross, and Death between your judgment and my soul, now and in the hour of my death. Deign to grant grace and mercy to me, pardon to the living, rest to the dead, peace to your Church, and life and eternal glory to all sinners. You who live and reign forever and ever. Amen

September is dedicated to our Lady of Sorrows. Throughout this month, we recall in prayer the suffering and sorrows the Blessed Virgin Mary endured so intimately with her Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
This prayer by St Alphonsus Liguori helps us draw close to the Lord Jesus through Mary, so that, by the grace of God, we can obtain true contrition for our sins and a real change of life.
O my sorrowful Mother, Queen of Martyrs and Queen of Sorrows, you wept so bitterly over your Son, who died for my salvation. But what good will your tears do me if I am lost? By the merit of your sorrows, obtain for me true contrition for my sins and a real change of life, together with constant and tender compassion for the sufferings of Jesus and your own sorrows. And if Jesus and you, though so innocent, suffered so much for love of me, obtain for me the grace that I, who deserve hell, may at least suffer something for love of you. Amen
