Why I do not celebrate Easter

I celebrate the Passover and the death and resurrection of Christ. We dare not ignore the historical, real and symbolic significance of the biblical and historical roots of these events like, for example, the Passover.

According to the Gospels, Jesus Christ, the Messiah that was promised in the Old Testament, was crucified and resurrected at the time of the Jewish Passover. Since that earth shattering event took place, those who believe Christ is their Messiah have honored that day and often celebrated it with the traditional Passover.

As the Gospel of Christ spread throughout non-jewish nations, among people who did not have a history of celebrating the Passover, the pagan rites of Easter gradually became assimilated into some western churches. Celebrating Easter has no biblical or Christian roots. It is totally pagan.

The English word Easter, (German Ostern), is probably derived from Eostre, or Eostrae, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring and fertility.

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary and coincides with Passover. The early disciples remembered his death and resurrection every Passover, which was when it happened.

The Passover feast was designed from its outset to foretell the redemptive sacrifice of the Messiah. It is laden with symbolism all pointing to Jesus and how his death and blood would purchase our freedom, forcing death to “pass over” us as it did for the faithful Israelites who daubed the blood of the lamb on their door frames.

We dare not separate ourselves from our Old Testament roots. Some churches began to separate themselves from God’s festivals, which were deliberately created to help us appreciate more about God’s plan of redemption.

So, the Passover was gradually replaced by Easter. The Passover and death and resurrection of Christ dare not be replaced by fluffy bunnies and Easter eggs. It is too serious a matter.

Celebrate Easter as much as you want but keep it out of the true, Christian Church, please.

Trust in God in times of fear

As Christians, we trust in God.

Let’s look at both sides of the coin. How often, when things go wrong, do we pray for help. That is good – we should seek God. However, when things are good, we might forget about trusting Him.

Another mistake we could make is that we trust in the things God can give rather than in God himself forgetting that all things ultimately come from Him. So, we rely on our health but when we become sick, we pray for health without really trusting in God.

Trust Him. At some point in our lives, we all face frightening situations – as we do now with this virus. No one is immune to trouble and when we run out of answers, when we do not know what to do, we could become fearful and discouraged.

Know this, the answer is God, not the things He can give. In Psalm 23 King David compares us with helpless sheep. He admits that it is God who leads us on the road of truth and righteousness. But also, when things go wrong, when the shadows of death’s darkness fill us with fear, that God is still with us.

Christian, let the presence of God be alive in you! Know that God is there when you enter a deep, dark valley. Do we not know that "All things work together for good...”?

We are God’s people. He will never abandon us. In Isaiah 41:1, at the end of the Babylon captivity, God said to the Israelites, “Don't fear, because I am with you; don't be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will surely help you; I will hold you with my righteous strong hand.

Don't panic. God is with you. There's no need to fear for He is your God. He will give you strength. “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matt 20:28)

Corona and “doomsday” preachers

The Bible teaches that the world will end but it does not say when. This has given rise to “doomsday” preachers over the centuries – trying to preach people into heaven with fear. I have seen some of them lately, feeding on the fears about the coronavirus.

There is also a new kind of religion where people think God is their personal servant or physician. When they pray, they expect immediate results. I saw a lady on TV just the other day who said she lost faith in God because she prayed, and He did not heal the person who sadly died. That kind of religion wants to see Paradise restored on demand. That is false hope. Paradise is gone. The Bible makes no promise that God will heal every disease or take away every problem we might encounter. In fact, the warns that life can be a struggle filled with hard labour, problems, disease and ultimately the death of the body.

What does the Bible teach about the end? It warns that there will be increasingly more wars, earthquakes, disasters, famines and diseases nearer the end. So, corona is just one of those things that the Bible talks about. So, we have been warned. Many will die of disease - so says the book of Revelations. It also promises that God will be with His people. We will not be alone when all these horrible things come our way.

Know this and be assured, He is with us now.

And then, when we least expect, Jesus will return. Come, Jesus, come

Angels We've Heard On High (In Excelsis Deo)

Angels we have heard on high,
Singing sweetly through the night,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their brave delight.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why these songs of happy cheer?
What great brightness did you see?
What glad tiding did you hear?
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ, the Lord, the new-born King.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Nearer, My God, to Thee

From Russia with Christ's love...

1 Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

2 Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I'd be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

3 There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
