Today we celebrate the feast of Saint Gregory the Great.

In England, this day is observed because it was Pope Gregory who sent Saint Augustine to evangelise the English.

A famous story recounts that Pope Gregory once saw fair-haired Angles being sold as slaves in Rome. When he asked who they were and learned they were Angles, he allegedly remarked, “Non Angli, sed angeli” — “not Angles, but angels!” Upon discovering that the Angles were not yet Christian, he sent Saint Augustine to England to bring them the faith. Although Christianity had previously reached these shores, the Anglo-Saxons were largely pagan until Augustine arrived. He established his see at Canterbury in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent, the first region to be evangelised.

This summer we've all had to cope with record-breaking heat and seen wildfires destroy people's homes and many open spaces.
Our climate is changing.
But every one of us is called to help avoid making it even worse, and there are many things we can do.
See some ideas on the noticeboard near the Lady altar.
And, as tomorrow 1 September is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, established by Pope Francis, here is a prayer that he gave us.

This prayer by Pope Francis appeared at the end of his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si'. It is for all who believe in God who is the all-powerful Creator.

A more formal farewell will take place on Sunday 18 October, the Feast of Saint Luke.

Today, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. Tradition holds that he spread the Gospel with unwavering faith, ultimately giving his life as a martyr. As we reflect on his steadfast witness to Christ, may we too be inspired.

Farewell to Father Vincent

Just a note to let you know that Father Vincent will be leaving the parish after Mass on 1st September. Next weekend 29/30th August will be his last weekend as Parish Priest of St Luke's before he retires.

We all wish him well.

After the 11am Mass on Sunday 30th, there will be an opportunity to say goodbye as there will be cake, cookies and prosecco being served on the piazza. Please make a note in your diary as you are all invited.

This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Solemnity would normally fall on 15 August, as that day is a Saturday, the feast is transferred to the Sunday in this country.

“The commemoration of the death of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the Dormition, or falling asleep, as it was known in the East) is known as the Assumption because of the tradition that her body did not decay but that she was raised up, body and soul, into heaven.”
