Thousands Celebrate "Melody of Myriads" with Enthusiasm in Ethiopia
YOUK Network, London | January 8, 2025
Thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church members gathered at Bole Debre Salem Medhanealem Church on January 6, 2025, to celebrate the second annual "Melody of Myriads" event. Organized by the Ethiopian Jandereba Generation, the event drew large crowds, filling the church grounds and even causing temporary road closures around Bole leading to Bole International Airport.
The celebration was graced by the presence of His Holiness Abune Mathias, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, who was joined by several esteemed church leaders, including His Holiness Abune Dioscorus (Archbishop of the Tigray Metropolitanate), His Holiness Abune Henok (Archbishop of Addis Ababa Diocese), His Holiness Abune Mekarios (Archbishop of the Western Canada Diocese), His Holiness Abune Thomas (Archbishop of Awi Zone Diocese), His Holiness Abune Elisha (Archbishop of the Somali Diocese), and others. Leaders from sister churches, as well as prominent singers and religious figures, were also in attendance.
The event began at 1:00 PM with a prayer for national peace and relief from natural disasters, hosted by Teacher Paulos Melka Selassie. This was followed by Gospel readings and covenant prayers led by His Holiness the Patriarch. His Holiness Abune Henok, Archbishop of Addis Ababa Diocese, welcomed attendees with a message of unity and hope. The official opening of the gathering was marked by teaching from His Holiness Abune Mathias, who blessed the event and extended his wishes for a meaningful celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ before returning to his office.
This year’s "Melody of Myriads" featured significant enhancements compared to the previous gathering. The stage was adorned with ancient Ethiopian artwork, with the Ark of Zion and the Chariot of Janderbaw displayed prominently, symbolizing Ethiopia's role as a keeper of the two covenants. Despite the overwhelming number of attendees, the event’s head of security, Jan Agafari, commended the participants for their patience and cooperation during inspections. “Although the turnout exceeded expectations, everyone showed remarkable discipline, making the celebration a success. We are committed to preparing an even better event next year,” he said.
The celebration reached millions, both in person and through online broadcasts, and concluded with a mass. Many participants stayed at Bole Debre Salem to attend the mass in person, while others followed the service via large screens. Reflecting on the success of the event, Haile Yesus, the host of the Ejat Jan Mass, announced plans for a "Liturgy Talent Course" on Janderabaw Media in 2026. “This course will help transition into the Melody of Myriads. We encourage everyone to join and learn,” he said.
The event garnered coverage from numerous national and international media outlets, highlighting its significance as a celebration of faith, unity, and cultural heritage.
