All Hallows by the Tower

An interesting series coming up from the South Georgia Heritage Trust, for those interested in the background history of the Quest crow's nest in All Hallows by the Tower.

Also, keep a look out for a new screen presentation we'll be showing in the church on Shackleton's Ships.

Quest - Shackleton’s final expedition - marked both an ending and a beginning. As we spent the first part of the year exploring the stories of the Endurance crew, we’re now turning to the new faces who stepped aboard Quest in 1921.

Following the end of World War I Shackleton was restless. He told his wife Emily, “I am no good at anything but being away in the wilds with just men. I feel of no use to anyone unless I am outfacing the storm in wild lands.”

So he started planning another polar expedition. The endeavour was underwritten by his friend John Quiller Rowett for what became the Shackleton-Rowett Expedition - Shackleton’s last voyage and the closing chapter of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the stories of these Quest crew members - the specialists, the young recruits, and the polar veterans who stepped forward for Shackleton’s final chapter.

This Sunday we will be celebrating Bible Sunday.

This year will mark the 500th anniversary of the first printing of the English New Testament in 1526. This Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the gift of being able to read the Bible in your own language.

To reflect this, you are invited to bring your Bible with you, and during the service we will give thanks to God and ask a blessing on the Bibles.

Although it is 10 years old now, it explains beautifully why it is such an important way to remember those lost at sea with no know grave.
The memorial, 'Oh Valiant Hearts' mentioned in the film, is now in situ, by the Mariners Chapel in All Hallows by the Tower, and can be seen during a visit.

This Thursday we are privileged to host The Service of Thanksgiving for those Lost at Sea with no known grave. We welcome the Maritime Foundation, and members of the families whose loved ones are recorded in The Memorial Book.

All are welcome to join this service.
Thursday 15th October at 12 noon.
