Maundy Thursday

Dear friends,

Maundy Thursday is celebrated at Tooting URC on 14 April 2022 at 12.00 pm.

The name of Maundy Thursday is thought to be a Middle English derivation taken from a Latin anthem sung in Roman Catholic churches on that day: “Mandatum novum do vobis” (“a new commandment I give to you”; John 13:34).

You may wonder about what happened on Maundy Thursday. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. On this day, Christians remember the Last Supper. During the meal Jesus took bread and wine and shared them with his disciples. In commemoration of the Last Supper, Christians often partake in a simple meal of bread and wine—commonly known as the Lord's Supper or Communion.

That is why Maundy Thursday Prayer and Lunch happens at Tooting URC today at 12.00 pm. If possible, we all celebrate in the Church together.
