Sukkot & Simchat Torah 5787 | Join Wimbledon Synagogue Live for the Festivals | חג הסוכות ושמחת תורה

We warmly invite you to celebrate the autumn festivals with Wimbledon Synagogue as we enter Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. Following the quiet introspection of the High Holy Days, we welcome Zman Simchateinu (the season of our joy). Because both festival weekends coincide with Shabbat, our services will be doubly festive.

Distance is no barrier to being part of our community. Our live streams offer a warm, accessible space to share in lively melodies, inspiring liturgy, and the celebration of the Torah.

Services are led by Rabbi Adrian Schell, accompanied by the Wimbledon Synagogue Choir on Sukkot morning and during both services for Simchat Torah.

When the Hasidic master Reb Zusyah lay dying, his students tried to comfort him by insisting he had been nearly as righteous as Abraham and almost as wise as Moses.

Zusyah simply shook his head and wept. He was not afraid of heaven asking why he had failed to be Moses. The question that terrified him was entirely different:

"Zusyah, why were you not Zusyah?"

Too many of us spend our lives reading lines from a script written by someone else, making ourselves small to keep the peace, or hiding our doubts because we think faith ought to look tidy. We confuse polite acceptance with genuine community. But belonging that demands you shrink is merely a cage with soft walls.

When the Shofar sounds its final blast at Neilah, it is through a cracked, imperfect horn, an unpolished call to stop living a borrowed life and risk being seen as who you truly are.

When Trust Breaks: A Rosh Hashanah Sermon on Presence, Grief, and Real Apologies

The Jewish New Year rarely begins with untroubled joy. Many of us arrive carrying unhealed hurt or sitting beside empty chairs. Moving from a town race in Chelm to the mountain of Moriah, this Rosh Hashanah sermon examines the shock of feeling abandoned by those we trusted. True repentance cannot be rushed, and forgiveness cannot be demanded. Real covenant begins when we leave our celebrations behind to sit with whoever is hurting in the quiet corners of our communities.

How many of us have sat through Yom Kippur counting down the pages left in the Machzor?

It is easy to laugh at, but underneath the clock-watching lies a genuine struggle. Many people feel estranged from a prayer book full of cosmic judges, ledgers, and divine tests. After the upheavals of history and modern thought, traditional pictures of God often fail to speak to where we actually live.

If you have ever felt you do not quite fit the mould, please know this: you do not have to pass a belief test to walk through the door of the Wimbeldon Synagogue.

In my Kol Nidrei sermon, I explore what happens when we stop looking for an enforcer in the sky and start looking at what Judaism asks us to do right here. When Moses asked to see the divine presence, he was not given a portrait to keep in his pocket. He was given a list of actions: compassion, patience, kindness, and truth.

Wherever you stand with faith, certainty, or doubt, you belong here.

A Tribe Turned Outward: Jewish Belonging in Fractured Times

Why holding a love for Israel and universal justice does not require an undivided heart to split in two.

Have you felt pressured to choose between your ethical commitments and your love for the Jewish homeland? This evening sermon speaks to the quiet fatigue of being tested, offering a spiritual home where no one is asked to become half a person. Jewish peoplehood is not an end in itself; its deepest purpose is to shape people who can belong while continuing to recognise the dignity of every human being.
