This centenary year of John Main’s birth, we’re reflecting on his 50-year-old letter from Thomas Merton’s hermitage. Even then, he called for a new political language rooted in the contemplative dimension of faith. Today, Tim Shriver reminds us: “In meditation we learn to live committed to the rule of prayer and to make it the spiritual foundation underlying all our activity.”

🕊️ John Main Seminar 2026: Healing the Breach
Join us as we explore how to find faith, meaning, and dignity in a season of contempt. Led by Tim Shriver. Respondents: Fr Laurence Freeman & Bishop Mariann Budde

"John Main's teaching around meditation, its resonance with the Gospel, with John Cassian, with Benedict, the Christian tradition - these three S's of being silent, of becoming still, of simply reciting our word gently, lovingly, with attention." Samuel, from the UK

In the coming weeks, meditators all over the globe will share the way Fr John Main has affected their spiritual journey. John Main OSB (1926-1982) is the founding inspiration of the World Community for Christian Meditation and this year marks the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

"His spirit of wisdom and faith has brought a remarkable phenomenon – the WCCM – into a living entity." says Fr Laurence Freeman

"Rediscovering is the desired result of all losing" says Fr Laurence Freeman in this video.

We spend so much time wishing we could go back to before we were hurt. But what if the "breakdown" wasn't a mistake, but a necessary chapter?

True recovery isn’t a return to the past—it’s the courage to evolve into a more complete version of your story.

Save this for when you need a reminder that you aren't stuck; you're just in a period of recovery.

Prayer isn’t just the fuel for the work—it is the work.

When we treat contemplation and action as two separate things, we risk losing sight of how powerful quiet prayer truly is.

"we're anxious not to be accused of 'navel-gazing or quietism', we always point to action almost as a justification for contemplation." says Revd Sarah Bachelard in this interview.

In a world of urgent need, even contemplatives are constantly being exhorted to ‘do’ something. This retreat 'Contemplation As Action' led by Revd Sarah Bachelard in Bonnevaux (8 - 12 September) explores not only the connection between contemplation and action, but the nature of contemplation as action. What is the vocation of prayer itself? How, with integrity, do we give ourselves to it?

Christ: The meaning of the human. Alpha and Omega. Healer of sick souls.

The new series of talks on Deepening Your Meditation will explore the gift of integrating meditation into your daily life through four interweaving tunes:

Faith, Love, Hope & Christ.

"Meditation never has a dull moment. People sometimes say, ‘it’s boring, doing the same nothing every day’. But when you come to see meditation as continuous deepening, even boredom becomes interesting. The process takes you through highs and lows, vast peaceful panoramas and hard slog up the mountainside." - Fr Laurence Freeman

Series starts tomorrow 8th June.
