Sha'arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue

Sha'arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue Sha'arei Tsedek is a warm, welcoming, inclusive and dynamic centre of Reform Jewish life in Whetstone, N20. Our meeting rooms can accommodate 2 to 10 people.

At Sha’arei Tsedek: North London Reform Synagogue we pride ourselves on our reputation of being a forward looking, dynamic, inclusive and welcoming congregation with a strong ethos of engagement with the secular as well as the Jewish world. Since its inception in 1961 as Southgate & District Reform Synagogue by a handful of interested families, Sha’arei Tsedek has grown into a substantial communit

y of approximately 1000 adults and children, with a team of two Rabbis. We have travelled from Winchmore Hill and then to Southgate before moving to our current site several years ago. Our friendly services and wide range of activities are designed to suit all ages. These include our nursery, Alonim Kindergarten, Mishpacha (family) activities, Koleinu band, Lunch and Chat for the less young, many social events and activities, religion school, B'nei Mitzvah programme and an adult study programme as well as interfaith activities. We pride ourselves on our friendliness, providing something for everyone. Sha’arei Tsedek is very proud of its nursery, Alonim, which was assessed as Outstanding in 2015/16 by OFSTED. In addition we have a professionally staffed Religion School, a Director of Music and administrative staff. We depend heavily on members of the community to volunteer their time to support the work of the synagogue and have a strong team of lay leaders who work alongside our rabbi to meet the religious needs of all our congregants. There are also teams of volunteers who provide essential support to those members who are ill or in difficulties, who provide regular lunches and social activities for older members, who arrange Shabbat and festival services for families with young children, who support the work of our administrative staff, arrange social and cultural events, sell Judaica and gifts, sing in the choir, mentor new members and maintain the building. We have a variety of spaces and meeting rooms suitable for business meetings, conferences, a wedding or birthday party. Our small hall is suitable for large meetings, receptions, talks, classes, lunches, dinners, and fitness classes. It is also suitable for children’s parties and we can supply nursery furniture. This room also has full AV equipment. Our main hall is perfect for larger events such as Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, conference or charity event. Both halls are air-conditioned, have AV equipment and contemporary lighting. The main hall can accommodate up to 160 people. We have full wheelchair access and disabled toilet facilities on the ground floor as well a loop system for the hard of hearing. All rooms feature wireless internet and the availability to stream your event live for those who cannot be present. Please enquire for further information. Special rates are given to charitable organisations

FOUR SYNAGOGUES. SIX RABBIS. AND ONE CANTOR FOR YOM HA ZIKARON AND YOM HA ATZMAUT

This week, we came together.

Across four synagogues, with six rabbis and a cantor, our community gathered to mark Yom Ha Zikaron and Yom Ha Atzmaut — holding remembrance and celebration side by side.

We honoured those we have lost, shared our hopes for the future, explored Progressive Zionism, and found strength in being together — through prayer, song, food, and dance.

Thank you to everyone who joined, contributed, and helped create such a meaningful evening.

This is our strength.

A FAREWELL TO ALONIM - A FORMER PUPIL'S STORY SHARED IN THE PRESS

At the end of March, families and friends of Alonim came together for an emotional and joyful Farewell Shabbat, celebrating more than four decades of the synagogue's much-loved nursery that has shaped generations in our community.

In a moving article by former pupil Sebby Blain, originally published in , he reflects on the closure of Alonim and the lasting impact it has had on him and so many families.

We invite you to read and reflect on this special tribute:

Mazal Tov to our member Angie Lawrence on receiving a Special Award from the in recognition of her outstanding contribution to fringe theatre.

Angie is a much-valued member of our community and many will know her not only from synagogue life, but also from her singing with both our synagogue choir and the renowned Zemel Choir. Most recently, she took part in our moving Yom HaShoah commemoration with the Zemel Choir and Southgate Progressive Synagogue, helping to make the service so powerful and memorable.

🎥 You can watch a recording of Angie singing with the Zemel Choir here: https://youtu.be/0xEZW0NpYvc

Reflecting on her award, Angie said: "Well this is a huge surprise and a great honour. Thank you so much Fringe Theatre Awards."

The awards ceremony will take place on 17 May, and we wish Angie a very special and well-deserved evening.

Mazal tov, Angie!

We’re proud to share that our Principal Rabbi, Shulamit Ambalu, has contributed an essay to the newly published book Progressive Judaism, Zionism and the State of Israel. Her chapter is titled A Different Prophet: Who Should Progressive Jews Listen to Today?

This thought-provoking collection brings together leading voices exploring the ideas and individuals shaping Progressive Judaism today.

Rabbi Shulamit’s chapter offers a powerful perspective — and you can read a short extract here: https://bit.ly/4ehUW6Q

We’re also delighted that Rabbi Shulamit has been invited to be one of just three speakers at the book’s launch — a great personal honour and recognition of her contribution.

Ha-Atzma’ut – Israel’s Day of Independence
Tuesday 21 April | 6.45pm

Bringing our communities together in prayer, song and reflection.

Join us at Sha’arei Tsedek North London Reform Synagogue for a shared evening marking 78 years since the Declaration of the State of Israel’s independence in 1948.

This year we are coming together with The Liberal Synagogue Elstree, Radlett Reform Synagogue and Southgate Progressive Synagogue for a joint community gathering.

We will mark both Yom Ha-Zikkaron and Yom Ha-Atzma’ut, taking time to remember, reflect, and also to come together in hope and connection.

The evening will include:
* A short commemorative reflection
* Israeli music and singing
* Food and time to meet and talk
* Space for learning and discussion

We will end with a short service, featuring our Yom Ha-Atzma’ut choir.

A £6 contribution towards supper would be appreciated.

This evening, we will gather as a community for our Yom HaShoah Commemoration at 7.30 pm.

We will take time together to remember the six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust, and to reflect on the lives that were lost and the families and communities forever changed.

We are grateful to be joined by our guest speaker, Peter Summerfield BEM, along with the Zemel Choir, who will support us in marking this moment of remembrance.

We hope you will be able to join us.

Today, we pause together as a community to remember, to honour, and to never forget.

On Yom HaShoah, we reflect on the lives and legacy of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

Across the UK, thousands of Yellow Candles are being lit. Here at Sha’arei Tsedek, we join in this shared act of remembrance — lighting a candle in memory, and in commitment to carry these stories forward.

Because remembrance begins at home, and continues through each of us.
