The martyrdom (Shahadah) of Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Rashidun Caliph, stands as one of the most pivotal and heartbreaking turning points in early Islamic history. Known as Al-Farooq (the distinguisher between right and wrong), Umar's decade-long rule saw unprecedented justice, administrative brilliance, and the massive expansion of the Islamic state.

His assassination in 23 AH (644 CE) shook the foundations of the young Muslim community, fulfilling prophecies and setting off a chain of political shifts that would shape the Muslim world for centuries.

1. The Prelude: The Motive and the Threat
Unlike many historical assassinations, Umar’s murder was not sparked by a widespread public rebellion or a popular coup. Instead, it stemmed from personal grievance and deep-seated political resentment following the rapid collapse of the Sasanian (Persian) Empire under Umar's expansion.

The perpetrator was Piruz Nahavandi, known in Arabic as Abu Lu’lu’ah, a skilled Persian craftsman, carpenter, and blacksmith who had been captured during the conquests and brought to Medina as a slave under the ownership of Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah.
The Complaint

Abu Lu’lu’ah approached Caliph Umar in the market of Medina to complain about the heavy tax (Kharaj) levied on him by his master, Al-Mughirah.

Umar asked him about his trades and the exact amount of the tax.

Upon hearing that the tax was two dirhams a day for a man who possessed mastery over multiple complex crafts, Umar judged the amount to be entirely fair given his high earnings.

Umar told him, "Fear Allah and be good to your master."

This fair judgment deeply angered Abu Lu’lu’ah. Umar, noticing his scowl, tried to defuse the situation by kindly requesting, "I have been told that you can build a windmill. Build one for me."
Abu Lu’lu’ah replied with a thinly veiled threat: "I will build a mill for you that all the people of the East and West will talk about."

Umar turned to his companions and remarked, "The slave has just threatened me." Yet, in keeping with his strict commitment to justice, he did not arrest or punish the man based solely on a vague insinuation.

2. The Assassination at Dawn Prayer
The tragic event took place during the Fajr (dawn) prayer at the Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Medina, on either the 26th or 27th of Dhu al-Hijjah, 23 AH.

Umar was highly meticulous about the prayer rows, always walking through them and ensuring the believers stood straight before commencing the prayer. Once satisfied, he stood at the front to lead the congregation.

The Attack

As soon as Umar raised his hands, uttered the opening Takbir (Allahu Akbar), and began reciting the Quran, Abu Lu’lu’ah slipped out from the front rows. He was armed with a custom-made, poisoned, double-edged dagger.
He lunged at the Caliph, stabbing him six times. The fatal blow struck deep into Umar's lower abdomen. Umar cried out, "The dog has killed or eaten me!" and collapsed to the floor.

The Chaos inside the Mosque

In a desperate bid to escape, Abu Lu’lu’ah sprinted through the dark mosque, slashing wildly at anyone who tried to stop him. He stabbed thirteen other companions, seven of whom passed away from their wounds.
Seeing the horror unfold, a Muslim worshipper threw a heavy woolen cloak over the assassin to pin him down. Realizing he was trapped and facing certain ex*****on, Abu Lu’lu’ah used his own poisoned blade to commit su***de on the spot.

Amidst the shock, the bleeding Caliph kept his composure enough to reach out and pull the hand of Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf, pushing him forward to quickly finish leading the traumatized congregation in a brief, light prayer.

3. The Final Days and Last Wishes

Umar was carried back to his home, drifting in and out of consciousness. When he fully awoke, his very first question was revealing of his character: "Who killed me?"
His companions replied, "The slave of Al-Mughirah, the Magian (Zoroastrian)."

Upon hearing this, Umar famously breathed a sigh of relief and said:

"Praise be to Allah who did not cause my death to be at the hand of a man who claims to be a Muslim and could argue against me before Allah with his single prostration!"

The Medical Prognosis

Physicians were rushed to his side. They administered a traditional infusion of dates and later some milk to sustain him. However, both liquids gushed out raw from the deep lacerations in his abdomen. The doctors softly shook their heads and gave the grim reality: "O Amir al-Mu'minin, make your final will, for you will not survive."

Request to Rest Next to the Prophet
Umar called his son, Abdullah ibn Umar, and gave him a highly sensitive personal mission. He instructed him to visit Aisha, the Mother of the Believers, and say: "Umar sends his greetings of peace. Do not call me 'Amir al-Mu'minin' today, for I am no longer the leader of the believers. Ask her if Umar may be buried alongside his two companions (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr)."

Aisha wept upon hearing the news and replied, "I had desired this spot for myself, but today I will give it up for Umar." When Abdullah returned with the good news, Umar’s face lit up with immense joy, stating that nothing in the world mattered more to him than resting peacefully next to his beloved friends.

4. Securing the Future: The Shura Committee
Umar refused to directly nominate a single successor, wishing to avoid any perception of nepotism or absolute rule, yet he refused to leave the Ummah in an administrative vacuum.
He established a brilliant, democratic solution: a six-member council (Shura) comprised of the most senior companions whom the Prophet ﷺ had explicitly guaranteed paradise.

He strictly ordered that his own son, Abdullah, serve only as a consultant to break a tie if needed, but forbidden from being nominated as a candidate for the Caliphate. He gave this council a strict three-day deadline to reach a unanimous decision, ensuring political stability.

5. Passing Away and Legacy

Umar ibn al-Khattab passed away three days after the stabbing, on the 1st of Muharram, 24 AH (November 644 CE), at around 60–61 years of age. His funeral prayers were led by Suhaib Al Rumi . He was buried precisely where he wished—side-by-side with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq in the Prophet's Mosque.

His final counsels to the future ruler encapsulated the values he lived by:
Fully respect and honor the early Emigrants (Muhajirun) and Helpers (Ansar).
Protect the rights, property, and treaties of the non-Muslim citizens (Dhimmis) living within Islamic lands.

Never overburden the people beyond their capabilities.

The martyrdom of Umar closed the golden era of absolute internal peace for the early Caliphate. As his contemporary Abdullah ibn Mas’ud lamented upon his death: "Umar's Islam was a victory, his migration was a triumph, and his leadership was a mercy. I truly believe that when Umar died, nine-tenths of religious knowledge left with him."
