The Village Shul - Pesach

Passover is a holiday that we can get behind completely physically and mentally. The concept of chametz, leaven bread represents our ego. So, as we clean our house from all leavened bread in the physical sense, we also clean our mind and heart from all ego. From all ego leaven in the spiritual sense... so we can become like a matzah pure self esteem with no ego attached.

The Shabbat before Passover has a unique name: Shabbat Hagadol, literally, “The Great Shabbat.” In some communities, it's customary for the Rabbi to give a long sermon on this Shabbat. But most of us begin preparing for Passover weeks in advance; nobody waits for the last minute. So a sermon a week before Passover needs to be more than just a recap of the dry laws of the holiday. Instead it should focus on inspiring the community to enhance their holiday in spiritual ways without allowing the hard work of preparing for the holiday to distract from its essence: celebrating freedom and liberty to serve G-d wherever we are.

Have you ever wondered why we call this section of the Haggadah the “Four Questions." yet if you look at the text they are actually four statements!
Why is this night different from all other nights?:
On all other nights we eat chametz (leaven) or matzah. On this night we eat only matzah.
On all other nights we eat all types of vegetables. On this night, we eat maror (bitter herbs).
On all other nights we are not required to dip even once. On this night we dip twice.
On all other nights we eat either sitting or reclining. On this night, we all recline.

Passover is right around the corner. And as you know, Passover is the holiday in which we eat matzah and refrain from eating or possessing any chametz. In the weeks preceding the holiday we clean our homes and rid them of all chametz. If, however, we still own any chametz = whether food products or dishes = that we'd like to use after Passover. Rabbi Yisroel at the Village Shul is able to to sell it all for you to someone not Jewish so that we do not own it for the duration of Passover. After Passover he will acquires it back for use.

As it is prohibited to possess chametz/Leavened products on Passover, any chametz left undisposed must be sold to a non-Jew. All such chametz, as well as all chametz utensils that were not thoroughly cleaned, should be stored away. The storage area should be locked or taped shut for the duration of....
