This week, Laoshi Brent shared a personal story with us about when he was learning flying sidekicks.
He told us that one Monday about a year and half ago, him and the other Laoshis were practicing their flying side kicks up against the heavy bags. Laoshi Brent likes to do things at 100%, and this time was no different. When it was his turn, he ran, jumped, kicked and… fell. He hurt himself and needed to take 2 weeks off training.
A few months ago, the Laoshis were, again, working on their flying sidekicks. While Laoshi Brent was concerned about falling again, he did not let his past failure stop him from trying again. And, by the end of the night, he was back to kicking the bag with all that he had.
In the Bible, there are many people who have failed. But, their failure did not stop them from trying again. Peter is a great example of this. The night that Jesus was arrested, Jesus told Peter “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice, you yourself will disown me three times.” Peter insisted he would not, but we later find out that Peter denied knowing Jesus not once, but three times that night. After he realized his failure, Peter broke down and wept.
But, Peter’s failure did not stop him from trying again. He went on to become a leader in the first churches vowing never to disown Jesus again.
At kung-fu, we fail in many ways. We might not do our punches right, and sometimes we will even fall. But as leaders, we are not going to let this stop us. We will get back up and try again.
In life, we might fail on a test, or feel like we have failed as a friend. But, we can get back up and try again, learning from our mistakes.
There will also be times when we fail in our faith: times when we sin and do what we shouldn’t. But, we can always remember God forgives us and lets us try again.
What Laoshi Brent reminded us is that just because we fail doesn’t mean we are failures. It means we are ready to learn.
