🍽️ A Place at the Table is officially launched! ❤️

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us last Thursday to celebrate the launch of this new community project. It was so special to see our synagogue members, friends, interfaith allies, our local MP Rachel Blake , HIAS+JCORE, and, most importantly, the incredible refugees who joined us to cook food from home. From Nigerian and Kurdish dishes to Argentine cuisine, the food was extraordinary. We cooked together, laughed together, sat around the same table and, of course, shared a wonderful community potluck where everyone brought something and got to try each other’s food. 🥘🌍

A special thank you to all our chefs for sharing not just their food, but a little piece of home with us. We also had a really meaningful conversation with David Mason from HIAS+Jcore and Rabbi Kamila Kopřivová about immigration, refugee status and what it means to build genuine human connection across different experiences and backgrounds. This is exactly what ‘A Place at the Table’ is about: meeting one another, sharing food, and creating a space where everyone has a place. ❤️ a massive thanks to all our volunteers and in particular Omer Cura for photos!

Today marks the third anniversary of October 7th. We remember those who lost their lives and hold in our thoughts all those whose lives were changed forever.

The past three years have been incredibly difficult for our community and the wider world. Today may bring up a whole range of feelings and emotions. Be kind to yourself and to one another, and give yourself space for whatever you need - whether that’s company, quiet, or moments of reflection.

For anyone who would like to gather with others, the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council are holding a vigil, be in touch for more information. If you’d prefer to mark the day in your own way, the Board of Deputies has gathered readings, personal stories and resources for remembrance and reflection. Chag Sukkot Sameach! What a wonderful first few days of Sukkot. From decorating the Sukkah together, Community Shabbat Dinner, Bar Mitzvah, Family Shabbat lunch and an afternoon tea, there were celebrations all throughout the weekend. It was great seeing everyone!

For our afternoon tea we have Josh and the project in to add an artsy element - thank you for coming!

We look forward to coming days of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, to round up this High Holy Day period.

On Monday, we marked Refugee Week with a wonderful Nigerian Cooking Class led by Charity, who taught us how to cook delicious dishes such as ‘Ewa Oloyin’ and ‘Jollof Rice’.

We are excited to now be collaborating with HIAS+JCORE for more events and programmes that will bring us together in supporting refugees and asylum seekers to find their feet in the U.K.

This past Shabbat, Debra celebrated her adult Bat Mitzvah with family, friends and community filling the sanctuary. Not only did she chant beautifully from the Torah, she also gave a great D’var Torah, when she reflected on the portion Korach, and how controversy isn’t always bad.
