Christians in Politics

Christians in Politics Christians in Politics is a cross-party, non denominational platform for Christians involved, or seeking to get involved, in politics and public life.

Our mission is to inspire and encourage Christians to get involved in politics and public life. We believe that decisions are made by those who show up. We strive to put kingdom before tribe and disagree well. Christians in Politics draws together Christians from across the political parties and beyond, and from across the breadth of the church. Honesty moment. Politics doesn't get better just because more Christians get involved. It depends what we are bringing to the table. Bad theology and character spawn negative influence in politics. Good theology and character spawn positive influence. With the increased misappropriation of religious imagery in politics, some are tempted to throw out the baby with the bathwater and try to keep faith and power separate. We feel that's the wrong (and easier) conclusion to draw. The harder yards are grappling with what scripture has to say to our world in 2026 and how that translates into legislation and leadership.

In response to the local elections we just want to say a huge well done to the many candidates and campaigners who took part and are genuinely seeking to make their communities a better place.

Points to note from this election include:

A big well done to Cllr Norma Harrington for being re elected to serve the ward of Wetherby. Let us pray for her alongside colleagues Sam Firth who was also involved in campaigning and it’s important to give a mention to Dan Cohen from the Jewish community for serving as Lord Mayor and simultaneously getting re elected to the seat of Alwoodly.

Congratulations to Ed Carlisle for getting re - elected to the seat of Riverside and Hunslet. A man who lives out his Christian faith by living alongside the people he serves. Also well done to Cllr Penny Stables for her work during elections. Both are part of the Green Party.

From a Labour perspective this has been a hard set of elections both in Leeds and across the UK. We want to say thank to Innocent for his campaigning in Middleton and all those who supported him with this including MP Hilary Benn. It’s great to see an African Christian getting involved in politics.
We pay tribute to Al Garthwaite and Cllr Andrew Scopes for their campaigning in Holbeck and Beeston and to Simon Dowling for his campaign in Yeadon and Otley.

We also want to celebrate wins and re election for Councillor Izaak Wilson who was re elected to the Ward of Weetwood. Izaak couldn’t have done this without the support of his council colleagues Emma Flint and Jools Hazlewood. We pay tribute to the work of Cllr Eleanor Thomson who took it upon herself to go the funeral of a neighbour on the day of the election (A very busy day) before campaigning. Ellie was re elected to the ward of Guiseley and Rawdon with the very strong support of Cllr’s Oliver Edwards and Sonia.

Finally please pray for all newly elected counties here in Leeds, across West Yorkshire and the UK and please assist us where you can in helping us connect with newly elected Christians who we don’t know about including from Reform, who have made major gains across our region and the nation.

Thanks to everyone who is involved in politics in our city, region and nation and seeking to do good. Let us keep praying for Gods kingdom to come through politics. 🙏

If your area is voting today make sure you vote. If not, you can still pray. The intimidation that the brave folks standing to serve connected to us have suffered this election cycle has been sickening to hear and on a level higher than anything we’ve seen before. Don’t shrug. Get stuck in.
