As Black History Month wraps up, we at St. Luke’s Church want to take a moment to honour and celebrate the richness of Black heritage and the incredible contributions of Black communities both within our church and beyond.

As we began October, Jon taught from Ephesians on the theme “Everyone’s in the Room”, and Praise reminded us last Sunday that Jesus is bringing us together making us all into something new. We are being reminding us of the importance of reflecting the richness of God’s Kingdom right here in Kentish Town.

We’re grateful that our church family reflects the diversity and unity that make St. Luke’s a welcoming home for all. Across every level of our staff and volunteer team, we see the beauty of different backgrounds coming together to serve, worship, and grow as one body.

And beyond October, we’re thankful that representation not just Black representation, but representation across cultures and backgrounds is not something set aside for one month. It’s embedded in who we are as a church and as the body of Christ.

As we step into November why don’t you subscribe to our Black History Month worship playlist which celebrates and honours Black songwriters and artists whose creativity and faith continue to shape the Church worldwide.

Happy Black History Month!

With love,
St. Luke’s Kentish Town

To mark Black History Month we will be remembering historical Black leaders of the Christian faith. This week: Harriet Tubman (1820-1913)

Born into slavery around 1820 in Maryland, Harriet's belief in the power of prayer to rescue people inspired a nation. She not only escaped slavery but helped hundreds of other African Americans find freedom through her work on the Underground Railroad.

She was given the nickname “Moses” for safely bringing every person she led from bo***ge to freedom. She also served as the first female leader of an armed expedition during the Civil War, directing the raid at Combahee Ferry that liberated more than 700 enslaved people. In her final years, she was active in the women’s suffrage movement.

Tubman was a woman of deep faith who had experienced God’s power firsthand. Contemporary biographer Sarah Bradford remarked that miraculous answers to prayer “never seemed to strike her as at all strange or mysterious; her prayer was the prayer of faith, and she expected an answer.”
