RKUK - Rissho Kosei-kai of the UK

RKUK - Rissho Kosei-kai of the UK Referred to as Nichiren Buddhism. RKUK has come to London to share the true spirit of Shakyamuni Buddha. Our main scripture is the Threefold Lotus Sutra.

RKUK (Rissho Kosei-kai of the UK) is the UK branch of a global Buddhist movement based in our London Buddhist centre to practise the Lotus Sutra for personal and social change. The precious and ancient scriptures of the Lotus Sutra are our guiding light. Rissho Kosei-kai (RK) is a global Buddhist movement of people who hope to manifest the Buddha’s teachings in our own lives, applying them in our

homes, workplaces and local communities – working towards a more peaceful world. We join hands with the followers of all faiths and none, and with people from all walks of life to take part in peace activities at home and around the world. RK was founded in Tokyo, Japan in 1938, and its representative body Rissho Kosei-kai of the UK (RKUK) in Oxford in 1994.

‘Rissho’ means establishing the teaching of the true Dharma in our hearts and minds; ‘Kosei’ means aspiring to perfect oneself through interaction with many people, learning together and encouraging each other, and ‘kai’ means ‘society’ or ‘organisation’. Our Gohonzon, or focus of devotion, is the Eternal Buddha Shakyamuni—Great Benevolent Teacher, World-Honoured One. We have a Buddhist centre in West London as well as online programmes, which are open to anyone for practice.

On March 12, 2026, in response to the ongoing situation in the Middle East, Rissho Kosei-kai issued a message titled “A Message Regarding the Escalation of the Military Conflict in the Middle East.”

We invite you to read and reflect on this message, which calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and emphasizes the importance of dialogue, reconciliation, and respect for the dignity of all life.

📘THE LEGACY OF HIROSHIMA📘

by Naomi Shohno

With the threat of nuclear annihilation looming over the human race, ‘The Legacy of Hiroshima’ offers a message we cannot ignore. The horrible effects of the bombing are explored from a dual perspective; their human toll and the physical facts that unveil the true impact of nuclear weapons and the hopelessness of survival in a nuclear catastrophe.

KAICIID expresses its deep concern over the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and the growing suffering of civilians and communities across the region. We stand in solidarity with all those who are grieving, injured, displaced, living in fear and uncertainty.

At this critical moment, the protection of human life and dignity must come first. We urge political leaders to choose peace, to act with restraint and responsibility, and to pursue de-escalation through dialogue and diplomatic engagement.

We also call on religious leaders and faith communities throughout the region to raise a clear and united voice for peace, reject hatred and any possible misuse of religion to justify violence, and help sustain compassion, solidarity, and hope.

KAICIID stands alongside its Partners and Fellows throughout the region with its full support and warmest thoughts, and remains committed to dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence as the path toward a just and lasting peace.

A Statement from the Religions for Peace Secretary General:

It is with great sadness and deep concern that we witness renewed conflict in the Middle East. We stand in solidarity with the people across the region who are suffering by the current hostilities – above all, the world must prioritize their well-being and respect for human rights, sovereignty, and rule of law.

🕊️ A PEACEFUL SPACE IN SCOTLAND🕊️
— where members of our RKUK Scottish Sangha gather for sutra recitation and hoza (Dharma circle.)

It may be far from London, but the spirit of the Lotus Sutra connects us wherever we are. Across the UK, small gatherings like this are taking root — nurturing community, deepening practice, and opening hearts.

Our Scottish Sangha currently meets in person 1–2 times per month. You’re also always welcome to join our London Centre’s events online, from wherever you are. If you live in Scotland and would like to join us, please feel free to reach out 🌿
