This weekend, black-clad, masked vigilantes blocked roads in Dover and Portsmouth, trying to stop terrified people reaching safety. These were acts of intimidation, not persuasion.

Britain has a proud history of sheltering people fleeing war and persecution. Migrants strengthen our communities, our economy and our public services. They are not the enemy. The answer to division is not more division, it is fairness, truth, and shared responsibility.

We know that healthy communities are built on dignity, not fear. The real danger on our streets this weekend was not a dinghy carrying frightened families. It was organised groups intent on spreading fear, motivated by mistrust and hatred.

As Meeting for Sufferings said in 2017, "We reject policies which condone suspicion and hatred; which turn away those who need and depend upon our help. We were not put on Earth for this, but to be a people of God, to live in harmony with each other."

We call on political leaders of every party to condemn this intimidation and violence without qualification, and on the public to reject the politics of blame. At times like this, we need leaders of courage who can strongly condemn violence and intimidation towards those seeking sanctuary and minoritised communities.

We are all called to build a peaceful world, and our actions to do so must be rooted in love. We can all be leaders in our own circles and communities, even as we ask our national leaders to reaffirm that everyone who lives here is part of our shared community.

Church leaders in Liverpool are inviting you to join them for a Walk of Witness, as part of the recently launched Time to Act campaign.

The campaign, organised by the Just Peace Coalition, is a growing, UK-wide ecumenical movement. United in the belief that a just peace in Israel and occupied Palestine is possible, the initiative is mobilising church communities to amplify the voices of Palestinian Christians and pressure the UK Government for end support for Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine.

On Sunday, September 27, as the Labour Party Conference opens, a Walk of Witness will begin, from Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, led church leaders.

The walk will finishes at Liverpool Cathedral where there will be a panel discussion featuring featuring Palestinian farmer and peace activist Daoud Nassar from the Tent of Nations, Canon Yazid Said, and representatives of the Just Peace Coalition, followed by a peaceful vigil outside the Labour Party Conference venue.

Hundreds of people are dead or missing after catastrophic floods tore through Nepal and Tibet. Homes, livelihoods, infrastructure and entire communities were swept away in minutes.
The people paying the price did almost nothing to cause this climate breakdown. Meanwhile, the world's wealthiest individuals and polluting corporations continue to profit.
As Quakers, we believe every life is precious. Climate justice means fairness and responsibility. Super-rich individuals and polluting corporations must pay the true cost of the climate loss and damage they are causing.
Making polluters pay isn't just moral, it's practical. Countries like Nepal should not be forced to divert money from health, education and other essential services to recover from climate disasters driven by emissions elsewhere.
