Chelmsford Cathedral is delighted to welcome Averil Pooten Watan as our new Senior Non-Executive Member of Chapter.

Appointed by the Bishop of Chelmsford, Averil brings over twenty years of experience across the voluntary, faith and social care sectors, including her work as a Registered Care Home Manager and community leader in Waltham Forest.

St Mary’s is working with the wider community to raise funds for residents who lost their homes in the fire on 12th July 2026. The two households lost everything when fire ripped through their flats at 75 Shernhall Street. The building itself has now been demolished which means these families will likely face months of being homeless as well as having to start again. The fire took everything but the clothes that they were wearing that day. Every penny raised via our GoFundMe page will be passed to the residents of 75 Shernhall Street to support them during this difficult time. To support these families, click the link in our Instagram bio, or, on Facebook, click the link in the comments below. 🍻 Join us tonight for our final Pop-Up Pub of the year! 🍻

We’ll have 🎶 live entertainment from 6pm until the England game kicks off at 10pm. ⚽ We’ll also be showing the match live on screens!

We’ve improved our outdoor seating area, so it’s the perfect place to relax with a drink, enjoy the music and cheer on England with friends. 🍺☀️

We’d love to see you there! ❤️
