Beautiful offerings in the Gompa for Saka Dawa, thank you to everyone who came in person and attended online for the sutra recitation and precepts with Geshe Namdak this morning - we’re looking forward to welcoming the Tibetan community this evening for more joyful prayer and practice 🌺 💫 🙏🩵

31/05/2026

Today is Saka Dawa Düchen, the holiest day of the Tibetan Buddhist year. The full moon of the month in which we commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha - a meritful day for prayer and practice.

If you have been meaning to give to the Duggard Way mural, today is a meaningful day to do it.

Our community has been holding the wish for something like this on Duggard Way for many years. The wall is ready, the design is finalised, the install is the final stage. We are aiming for £3,000 by the end of the month.

Thank you to everyone who has already given. 🙏

Today is Saka Dawa Düchen.
The full moon of the fourth lunar month, and the day on which we commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is taught that the karmic results of virtuous actions performed today are multiplied one hundred million times.
This morning at 10:00, we gather in the gompa and online for the final session of our three days of sutra recitation with Geshe Tenzin Namdak.
Together we will recite the Heart Sutra, and Chanting the Names of Manjushri, offered as advised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to remove obstacles for the swift and unmistaken identification of the reincarnation of our precious Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Whether you join us in person or online, whether for the full session or a few minutes of quiet practice at home, may today's merit ripen in great benefit for all beings. 🌕

A glimpse of what is coming to Duggard Way and how our community mural has been taking shape.
Months of consultation with neighbours, students, and passers-by shaped this design. Artist Justin Catto has brought it together with extraordinary care. We are nearly there, and the final design is in the making.
We're raising £3,000 to install the mural. Whether you give £5 or £50, your name or dedication is part of this. 🎨

Last year there was a knock on the door from Lambeth Council. They were planning a Liveable Neighbourhood project for our corner of Kennington and wanted to know if Jamyang had ideas for Duggard Way.

A colourful community created mural!

After months of community consultation, months of preparing the wall, and months of design work with the brilliant Justin Catto, we are nearly ready. The mural will capture the heritage of this corner of south London, the pink elephant statue that once stood at the roundabout, and the diverse community that Jamyang serves, offered as a small gift to everyone who passes by.

We are asking the community to help us raise £3,000 to bring it to life. This Saka Dawa, every pound counts. 🐘

Tomorrow evening marks the beginning of three days of sutra recitation at Jamyang, leading us to Saka Dawa Düchen on Sunday, the holiest day in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar.
Across these three days, Geshe Tenzin Namdak will lead us in reciting the Heart Sutra and Chanting the Names of Manjushri, offered as advised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to remove obstacles for the swift identification of the reincarnation of our precious Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
It is taught that the merit of virtuous actions in this month, and especially on Saka Dawa Düchen itself, is multiplied many times over. A rare opportunity to gather, recite, and dedicate together.
In person or online. Newcomers very welcome.

When you chat with an AI, it can feel like you're speaking with another being. But does that hold up? Does it actually understand you? Could it ever be conscious - and are those even the right questions to ask?

On Saturday 20 June, we're hosting a live dialogue between two people uniquely placed to answer.

🧠 Professor Murray Shanahan — Emeritus Professor of AI at Imperial College London and Principal Scientist at Google DeepMind. Scientific advisor on the film Ex Machina. His recent work argues that thinking carefully about disembodied AI leads toward something that looks remarkably like emptiness in the Buddhist sense.

🧘 Geshe Tenzin Namdak — Jamyang's resident teacher, originally trained as a hydrologist in the Netherlands before ordaining with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The first Westerner to complete the full twenty-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey Monastic University, now pursuing doctoral research at Oxford.

Moderated by Chris Scammell of the Buddhism & AI Initiative.

Hybrid event - in person in Kennington or online. Saturday 20 June, 6.30–8pm BST. £15.

23/05/2026

Our resident teacher, Geshe Tenzin Namdak, will lead the Light of the Path Retreat 2026 at Kopan Monastery, Nepal, from 20–30 December.

Established at the wish of Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the Light of the Path series gathers students from across the FPMT community for structured Lamrim study and practice in the lineage Rinpoche transmitted.

This year's retreat focuses on the Middle Scope of the Lamrim: the meditations that cultivate renunciation and turn the mind genuinely toward liberation. Across ten days, Geshe-la will guide teachings and meditations on the nature of samsara, karma, the Four Noble Truths, and the three higher trainings of morality, concentration, and wisdom.

Daily practice includes morning Lama Chopa, guided Lamrim meditations, and evening Vajrasattva.

Open to all, though a foundation in Lamrim and core Mahayana teachings (such as Discovering Buddhism or a previous Lamrim retreat) will help you get the most from it.

After 6 cumulative years of study and service, Venerable Konchok is leaving Jamyang this June. Before he goes, we as a community, wish to thank him.

Adam first came to Jamyang in 2019, on Geshe Tenzin Namdak's very first Discovering Buddhism course. The teachings took root. He joined the Basic Programme, offered his video editing skills to Science and Wisdom LIVE, became a youth Inclusivity Ambassador, and in 2021 moved in as a resident Karma Yogi.

In November 2022, travelling with the Jamyang team to Kopan Monastery, he requested ordination from Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Rinpoche, in his wisdom and kindness, granted it. Venerable Thubten Konchok came home to The Old Courthouse.

In the years since, he has catalogued the Dharma Library, digitised our archive of recordings from holy beings, supported global broadcasts for Yangten Rinpoche, Khandro Tseringma Rinpoche and H.E. Ling Rinpoche, led last year's AV revamp that gave the main gompa studio-quality production, chaired Lambeth's interfaith charity Faiths Together, and helped welcome schools to our home. The merit, we're sure, immeasurable.

This June, Ven. Konchok leaves London for Sarah College of Higher Tibetan Studies in Dharamsala, and from there, aspirations to join Sera Jey Monastery to begin the traditional twenty-year Geshe programme.

As a community, during the holy time of Saka Dawa, we are gathering to offer dana with gratitude for all he has given, and to support him on his way for his future studies..

Join us in wishing Ven. Konchok well on his path. 🙏

Kindness Cafe is looking for front-of-house volunteers, particularly for Wednesday evenings and Saturday daytimes.

It's a friendly role: making people feel welcome, making drinks and serving food, having a chat. No experience needed, just warmth and a willingness to be part of the team.

Kindness Cafe is more than a cafe. It's a space where Jamyang's values of kindness, ethical sourcing, and community come together over a good cup of coffee, and our volunteers are at the heart of that.

If you'd like to get involved, email Jasmine at [email protected]

🙏 Help shape the future of Jamyang

Our team has been exploring new ways to bring the Dharma to more people and make Buddhist teachings as accessible as possible - in particular looking at the scheduling of long term courses and donation structures.

To make sure we're moving in the right direction, we'd love to hear from our community. If you received our email last week and haven't yet had a chance to respond, there's still time, the survey closes this Friday. It takes just a few minutes, and every voice helps shape what comes next.

Over 200 students from around the world have now joined Geshe Tenzin Namdak's new course on Calm Abiding & Special Insight.

The response and level of interest from students and practitioners around the world has been so strong that we've removed our original cap of 150 places.

If you've been thinking about it, there's still time.

The first class is now on YouTube. You can watch, see how Geshe-la teaches, and catch up before joining the rest of the 18-month programme live on Wednesday evenings.

This is sustained training in shamatha and vipashyana drawn directly from Lama Tsongkhapa's Lamrim Chenmo - the kind of teaching that has historically only been available in monastic settings or extended retreat.

📅 Enrolment closes Tuesday 20 May

🌱 Buddhist Voices for Climate Hope

At Jamyang, one of our environmental principles is Learn from Each Other. We grow through partnership with other communities on this journey, sharing knowledge and amplifying our collective impact.

In that spirit, we're delighted to share this invitation from Faith for the Climate.

On Wednesday 20 May, 1 to 2pm BST, FFTC is hosting a webinar bringing together Buddhist voices from across the UK to explore how our traditions are responding to the climate and ecological crisis.

Joining the conversation:
🌿 Joe Mishan (XR Buddhists, Vipassana practitioner)
🌿 Rehena Harilall (Plum Village, Buddhists Across Traditions)
🌿 Olivia Fuchs (Eco Dharma Network of the Network of Buddhist Organisations, SGI-UK), facilitating
🌿 Canon Giles Goddard (Chair, Faith for the Climate)

The conversation is part of A Million Acts of Hope, a campaign inviting people of all faiths to take meaningful action for our shared home, with reflections on what's planned for Buddhist Action Month and the Great Big Green Week in June.
Whether you're already engaged with eco-dharma or simply curious about how Buddhist practice meets environmental action, you're warmly welcome to join.
