"We have certainly created many of the jinn and mankind for Hell. They have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock — no, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless." Surah Al-A'raf, ayah 179
Notice — Allah doesn't say these people have no heart, no eyes, no ears. They have all of it. Fully working. The problem isn't the hardware. It's that they never use it for what it was made for.
That's kind of us with the Qur'an, not gonna lie. We've got the Qur'an on lock — hifz, tajweed apps, Qari playlists on Spotify basically. Access has never been easier. But access isn't the same as impact.
You can listen to Surah Yaseen every night and still lie to your parents the next morning. You can memorize Juz Amma and still be toxic in your group chat. You can cry at a beautiful recitation and still not pray Fajr. That's the gap. Ears that hear sound, but not message. Eyes that read letters, but don't actually see. A heart that's technically alive, but spiritually on airplane mode.
The Sahabah didn't have Qur'an apps. Some only knew a handful of surahs. But when they heard an ayah, it hit different — it rearranged their whole life on the spot. Umar (RA) heard a few lines from Surah Taha and completely flipped, right then and there. That's the difference between hearing at the Qur'an and actually letting it in.
So here's the challenge, not gonna sugarcoat it: next time you press play or open the mus'haf, don't just let it wash over you. Stop. Ask — what is this ayah actually asking me to change? Then go change it. That's it. That's literally the whole difference between being someone who has the Qur'an and someone the Qur'an actually has.
Allahumma-j'al al-Qur'ana rabee'a quloobina — O Allah, make the Qur'an the spring of our hearts, not just the sound on our lips.
