Choir of St Mary Merton

Choir of St Mary Merton The Choir exists to lead and enrich the worship of the ancient parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Merton SW19, which celebrated its 900th year in 2015.

One of the last chorister teams in London - musical opportunities for singers aged 7+. The Choir exists to lead and enrich the worship of the historic parish church of St Mary the Virgin, Merton SW19, which celebrates its 900th year in 2015. It sings at the Parish Eucharist and Choral Evensong every week in term-time. The Choir itself has a long and distinguished history, and is one of the last pa

rish choirs in London to maintain an historic chorister tradition. We have a rich and varied repertoire spanning more than 500 years and welcome enquiries from potential new singers (both adults and young people). St Mary Merton provides a free musical education from professional musicians to young singers from across south London aged 7+, as well as being at the heart of music-making - and the community - in Merton Park. The Choir has been at the heart of worship at St Mary's for generations; our records show that a choir similar to the modern-day one has existed at St Mary's for over 150 years - probably longer. The modern Choir, which numbers around 30, is made up of adult volunteers (both men and women) and choral scholars who sing the alto, tenor and bass lines, and boy and girl choristers (aged 7+). As well as supporting worship at home, the Choir regularly performs in concert and visits cathedrals across the UK to sing week-long residencies. In recent years these have taken the Choir to York Minster, and Wi******er, Exeter, Coventry and Guildford Cathedrals.

The Vicar would be glad to speak informally with interested candidates - contact info is at the foot of the advert below.

Each session will include singing sessions with vocal coaches, working on sightreading skills and musicianship, and a Q&A session with current Choral Scholars. Those in Yrs 11-13 will experience a walk-through of a 'Virtual Evensong' with composer and Director of the Choir at Gonville & Caius College, Matthew Martin. The day will end with a special join session with choral composer and conductor, Eric Whitacre!

The Choristers are returning to the stalls for the first time tomorrow, with a small group singing for our Patronal Festival.

Bit of a challenge doing socially-distanced robe fitting this year (thanks parents for getting your tape measures out!) but we’re all set and good to go! Roll on Sunday!

We were thrilled, relieved, excited and very emotional to be back rehearsing together last night - the Choristers sang live together for the first time in six months. Much joy everywhere!

They will be back singing at services (in smaller groups) from next Sunday, followed by the back row two weeks after that.

As our public services are suspended, we'll be streaming a special evening service tonight at 7pm, sung by the Choristers. You can tune in here on our Page (facebook.com/stmarysmertonchoir) or http://stmarysmertonchoir.com. A bit of a new technical avenue for us!

In line with churches and cathedrals across the UK, public worship at St Mary's has now been suspended due the COVID-19 outbreak. We will be offering some streamed services which will be available to view in the window on the left. Details of these services will be posted here in due course. The liv...
